Show I 1 DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, FEBRUARY WEEKLY REFLEX 25. 1981 Woods Cross Finished Year By DANE - One would probably have to. have some compassion for the Woods Cross basketball program. Afterall if a couple of shots would have gone in here and there, or maybe a couple of other shots wouldn't have gone in. then the Wildcats would be entering the state playoffs. HOWEVER, THE Cats finished out a frustrating season last week w ith a loss to the West club that will go to the tournament as the third place club from this region. The Cats had an up and down season all year. They started out winning their first five preseason games and getting the attention of everyone. Then they hit hard times but they still were considered one of the three top clubs in he league entering region play. IN THEIR first outing the Cats were ambushed by South and this served as a sign of things to come. This was one of those games the Cats were in until the final shot. With ten seconds to go the game was tied and the Cats had the ball. South came up with a steal and the winning basket and the Cats were shocked in the opener. Maybe they didn't fully recover from that first loss for awhile but when the dust had settled they had lost to both Bountiful and Viewmont by identical scores. In both these games they were in the game the entire way only to lose in the final moments. 48-4- 6 Viewmont team downed settled the Braves earn the right to meet the tourth place team from Region F our for the final state touinament berth Ben L.omond and Bear River play on Tuesdav. the winner plays Davis on Wednesdav then Bountiful gets the loser of the Wednesday game on Friday I hat pleases Mike Hall in one aspect "We get to rest while they battle each other, plus we'll get to see them play while they haven't had much " opportunity to scout us WITH a region mark the Cats regrouped and made a great run at some folks. First they knocked off powerful Highland in easy fashion by 14 points, then they nipped W'est by a single point on the Panther floor and finally they avenged the South loss with a win over the convincing Cubs. The West win was only the second loss by the Panthers on their home floor in region action. So entering the second battle with Bountiful the Cats were right back in the picture. However, bad luck struck again as the Braves hit a shot at the buzzer to hand the Cats a two point setback. 0-- 3 62-4- 9 EVENTHOIGH the Braves only placed fourth in their league the thing that has opposing coaches buzzing is their vouth. "Do you realize Sports basketball region around. at some of the clubs to the state meet from regions and chances are Cats could beat most of Quiz Showing some of the honors gained bv the Saltos Gymto r, Ellen Cooper. Christiansen and Steve Gruenewald ail played well for the Cats and will be missed next season. Clay played his best games against South while Dale and Steve played well against Bountiful and Viewmont. THE CATS do have some talented people returning next season. Big Richard Johnson will return to the middle and Bruce Bishop, who saw some action this year, w ill be back at a forward spot. Again one has to feel a little bit of sympathy to this club. They deserved to be in the state tournament and with a couple of breaks along the way, they would have made it GYMNASTICS HONORS The Saltos, defending tional tumbling champions, now begin preparations for the Class II championship which they will host on March 21. The bad news, of course, is that the Darts lost last week to Ogden and thus didn't get any piece of the region title. The good news, though, is that they placed third in league and are activiinvolved in ties. Five) on Friday tor the final spot in the state tournament. One would suppose the Darts don't care which club wins on Tuesday since they split with both of them in league play. However, the game they lost to Ben Lomond was the first of region play and without the services of junior Brian Taylorwho is their leading point getter. The second time around they handled the Scots. BEAR RIV ER slowed things down in Kaysville with the Darts winning despite scoring less than 30 points on the night. Up north, though, the Bears ran with the local lads and came away big winners in what had to be the worse showing for the Darts in region play. If the truth were known the Darts will probably be pulling for Bear River to win the playoff game since they match up better, size wise, with the Bears THE DARTS have hit hard times lately as far as winning games goes, but consider they lost their final two games of league play by four points to the two clubs that won the title. Box Elder nipped them in THE WINNER of the Wednesday game involving Davis will advance into the state tournament as the third GYMNASTS By mote understanding and :mg some quite complicated routines. Ogden and Box Elder tied for the title but since the Tigers beat them twice in league play the Tigers will enter state as the number one team and the Bees as number two. Davis was third in league play and will await the winner of the game between fourth place Ben Lomond and the fifth place Bear River. Those two clubs will meet at Box Elder on Tuesday. Bountiful beat them twice by a total of six points, Viewmont tw ice by a grant total of five points, and South beat them by two. The Cats did show some great talent during the season and it's a shame they won't get to show their stuff in front of the state tournament crowds. Probably the biggest mistake the Cats made was being placed in Region Five which top to bottom is the toughest 55-5- 1 THEN - Woods Cross by a single point the following game. The Cats had the ball with about six seconds remaining in the game but they failed to convert on their final shot. Highland, one of the honest clubs around, then came into town and ran away from the Cats and finally the West crew playing inspired ball, took the final battle of the season away from Woods Cross last Friday. He's scoring in the 20 point per game average SENIOR TERRA Ferrell has played well in league plus for the Braves and his outside shooting has taken some of the heat off Bell inside. Terrs has been one big reason the Braves acaie involved in tion. Mike Woodbury has been a giant on the boards for the Biases as has Alan Meldrum these two have battled bigger people for rebounds all season and more than held their own The youngsters have played extremely well especially on the guard line. Juniors. Todd Smith and Lex Brown, along with Sophomore Standout Blake Izatt have been another big reason for the teams success. Izatt has come on strong in recent weeks and shows no lack of confidence when it comes to dnv ing to the bucket. Smith and Brown are both excellent outside shooters and can turn a game around post-seaso- n . "So it worries you when your hushand talks in his sleep " "A es. doctor 25-- AT THE first of the year few felt the Braves would be atound for the state picture, but here they are. Mike Hall and his staff has to be credited with a fine job this year along with the players. Bountiful will be well rested for their playoff game on Friday and will get into the state tournament for the second straight year. COUNTY LEADING SCORERS |
