JULY 31, 1980 Local Tumblers Attend National Championship Fourteen members of the Tumbling Team re- cently returned home after competing in the USSAF-USTNational Champion- ship held June at Oxford, Ohio. The team is coached by 19-2- 0 Mrs. Terry Ellis and Jim Aamott. MEMBERS of the team come mostly from the Ogden and north Davis County area although one team member lives in Magna and another team member comes from Grand Junction, Colo. The qualified for the CSSAF-USTNational-Championshi- p early in the year in regional competition that was held in Casper, Wyo. and Murray, Ut. The tumbling team earned second place in both tumbling and acrosport competition in the national meet. 1ND1MDUALS finishing in the top ten were: Julie Beaty, first, in platform and tumbling, age group; second in open power tumbling; Steve Cooper, third in junior mixed 15-1- 8 pairs; fourth double-min- in trampoline, i age group; 8 eighth in men's junior platform; Gina Garcia, fifth, in double-min- trampline, i 2 women's pairs; Stacey Hansen, third, in tumbling, age group; third in junior mixed pairs; Kay Davis, 4 third, in double-min- i trmpo-lin- e, age group; third in double-min- i trampoline, open; sixth in tumbling, age group. SEVENTH in women's pairs; Sara Marshall, fifth in tumbling. age group; fifth in platform; 10th in pairs; Teddie, Endow, second in tumbling, age group; third in platform; seventh in women's pairs. Jennifer Weaver, second in junior mixed pairs; Jim Totaro, second in junior mixed pairs; JaNae Simmons, tenth in 2 4 8 wor-men- 's 8 womens pairs; Debbie Symonds, ninth womens in pairs. THE SPORTS Acrobatic National championships were televised on CBS Sports Spectacular. Bowen is a member of a factory team with sponsors such as Oakley and Kuwaraha with some help from the local Bik-er- y Shop. Utah, Idaho, California, Nevada, Montana, Wyoming and Colorado, qualified for the National AAU Junior Olympics. FINISHING among the top ten at the junior Olympics were Steve Cooper of Layton who placed sixth in mens tumbling and seventh in double-min- i trampoline; Gina Garcia who took fourth in women's tumbling and Kay Davis w ho placed eighth in women's tumbling. s The United States national USSAF-UST- championships. Smith, son of Norma Chambers of Layton, has completed recruit training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego. rid- THE FOLLOWING week he raced in Sandy and w'on and for the next three weeks he won all the races he entered. That almost spoiled this guy, "I started thinking all I had to do was show up and Id win I was that good, but then my mother took me aside and set me straight and told me I wasnt as good as I though I was and that I should practice harder. Those practice sessions are still a major part of his life as he spends about three hours a day up in the hills above his home in Bountiful.
