Show g WEEKLY REFLEX iX Life In I HAD made plans when I got off fish tier to attend an AA meeting but I kept putting it off until I felt I had the time. Well, I finally made the time and went to the meeting to check things out. 1 didnt know it then, but the people I met in AA were to end up being the only real friends I would have for a long time. Because AA is an anonymous group, I dant go into details that are said in each meeting, but I can say the reason 1 first went was to help me get some action when 1 went to the Board, but after 1 attended several of their meetings, and listened to w hat these guys were saying, I began to think a little more differently about myself and about what I wanted to use AA for. I began to get involved. 1 was on a cleanup committee for almost five months after 1 started going. 1 began to feel useful for the first time, and that felt good. ANOTHER THING about this group, it is based on trust and honesty, and when there are thirty or forty inmates in a group like this, you can adhere to their own rules without trying to make a play on somebody, or trying to get an AA officer to do something that isn't legal, then you know you have something good. 1 would go into my house at night after the meetings, I would ask myself if I was, or if I am an alcoholic. One of the hardest things to do is to admit to yourself who and what you are. It became a struggle for about two weeks before I finally gave into the truth, I am an alcoholic. I AM blowing my own anomity but I dont care. There is more to this story than my being an alcoholic, but getting back to what Im saying, the men in AA became the only real people I could relate with, and the only ones I could count on for support, help and understanding. Outside of Keith, I finally made friends for friends sake, not because I worked in the school department and could get ink for tatoos, not because I write poetry for other people, but because I am me. And let me tell you, that is one beautiful feeling. I HAD put in my move order to go to and I was approved. Keith wasnt. That was sort of a bummer, but I told Keith not to try to go to minimum security until he went to the Board. Now he would have to wait at least two weeks before he could request a move change again. The day I moved, I had four boxes packed with books, typing paper, typewriter, clothes, hygeine materials, mattress, the whole works. I even had a chair which is considered contraband that I took with me. WHEN I was approved, Lt. Devins said I was required to maintain the rules and regulations and that any infraction would have me removed back to the block I just came from. said, don't worry about a thing. I'll be like an angel over there. He sort of smiled and replied, See to it that the angel doesnt get into anymore fiths while he is her either. I DIDNT change my facial appearance, but in the back of my mind I knew there was a snitch in the crowd somewhere. I haven't the foggiest idea what you are talking about. I dont get in trouble, you know that. Dont try to snow me. I know all about what happened in the gym and I dont mind saying Sumpter didnt deserve what he got, but be careful in the future. You appear to be an intelligent person, and around here youll have to use your brains more than you fists if you want to get ahead. Just remember that. He paused for a minute, then added, I like you Bill, but I cant be responsible for anything that happens to you. The only alternative is Protection, if you want me to. PROTECTION! For what? If you think Im going to spill my guts as to what happened and who was involved, you are crazy! Ill get along in here just fine. Besides, I have plans for my future, and if I go to Protection, Ill never be able to accomplish what I want to do. "Okay, have it your own way. Keep in mind what I said. Dont buck the inmates, and dont buck the system. Its a losing battle and youll end up getting hurt in the end or dead. I GOT up from my chair, walked over to the office door and without ever turning to face him I said, De- vins, you watch your back and dont worry about mine. I knew the advice he gave me was solid and sound. Why I tried to play hard with him I dont know unless it is that one part about being an inmate and the image a man has to live up to, I dont know. But I didnt have any trouble for quite a long time. LATER THAT same day I was paged to go to the dental lab. This part I hated, for it meant I was to get my teeth pulled. I remembered about a week prior to this appointment, I went there for an examination and the dentist looked into my mouth and asked, Have you taken drugs in your life? I was taken aback by that saying, Wait a minute, check my medical records, youll find out I have never used any drug except alcohol, and most drugs that can be had only by prescription I cant take! Relax, if you havent been using drugs, you must be seventy years old and well preserved for your teeth look that old. WELL, ITS a combination of a lot of things Doc. One is Ive had bad teeth for as long as I can remember, and the other is I never took care of them the way I should. I want you back here in one week. Those teeth have got to come out. HERE I was again, back in the dental chair getting ready to have them all come out. Top and bottom alike. Say Doc. How long will it be before I get my dentures? HARD TO say. If everything goes right, after we wait for the swelling to go down, lets say j0 days, we can go ahead with impressions and after three or four of those, we can have you fitted and pretty well intact. Right now we are looking somewhere around May. I waited this long, I guess a few more months wont kill me. ABOUT THREE that afternoon, an hour after he started, my mouth was empty. He told me not to smoke for 24 hours, to stay with soft foods for the next three meals, and come back to let him check my gums. An hour later, I smoked about six cigarettes, ate pork chops for dinner that night, and never had any lems. 0b oi (Continued From Last Week). I JULY 10, 1980 Prison Mm Lt. This infuriated all the inmates who lived there as the block is quiet and peaceful. We tried to approach the staff in a respectful and dignified manner, but this obviously was something they couldnt understand, so we tried another way which seemed to do the trick. I WALKED over to him, grabbed him tightly around the throat and began to squeeze. Several of the inmates in the class pulled me from him. My hands shaking from what I did, 1 looked him straight in the eyes and said, you can take this anyway you want, but if you ever say another word to Pat again that even implies the vaguest thing towards being vulgar, youre a dead man. Got it. He could tell 1 was serious, 1 could tell that by the glint in his eyes that spoke fear. I turned and saw Pat standing by the door. Not once had she gone after a cop. She smiled and thanked me for my concern. 1 felt bad about what I had done and apologized for my actions. EACH INMATE wrote on a sheet of paper that their life was in danger and demanded to go to Protection. Staff took one look at the 80 requests, said we w ere all insane, and would grant our request. But inside of eight hours the rest of the inmate population was ready to back our play. Kitchen staff, mostly inmates, refused to prepare another meal, plumbers refused to work, electricans were unable to work, and all because they felt their lives were threatened, and like us demanded to go to Protection. THANK YOU for w hat you did Bill. He had it coming for a long time, you know that as well as I. Who knows, it may have done him some good. He might begin to do some hard thinking about w here he is going t, with his life.. I didn't feel happy, but at least she had enought trust in me not to call an officer. I looked at everyone in the class. They stared back at me as if I were someone they never saw before 1 kept my word I never laid a hand on Bob or anyone else while I was working with her or any of the other teachers. STAFF WANTED to have their own way and residents refused to move due to a total lack of consideration for our feelings, especially since most inmates wanted to spend most of their time in their house, and make it as comfortable and liveable as possible. A compromise was made. Staff said they would hold off until a feasible solution could be found, and asked the inmates to help them find a way to make their plan . AA STARTED to become my prime motivator. 1 started doing voluteer work for the group, and every now and again would speak about my alcohol problem. Everytime 1 spoke, I believed myself more and more. At first I was going to use AA for a shot at the Board, but as 1 became more involved, the less 1 wanted to use AA. 1 wanted to use it to help myself. It was one big lesson i learned in the group that a man isnt willing to accept help from others unless he can accept himself for who and what he is. I was ready. work. THE MAJOR problem is the prison can hold about and presentley there are about 30 open cells. The word was out that another 150 men were sitting in county and city jails waiting for an opening. So things were only starting to come to a head. One mistake I made was to put in a move order to I hadnt nay trouble getting approved, but I was put on the third tier which was called trouble tier. At that time 1 had no idea how much trouble, but I was going to learn. 1100 inmates SOME OF the men I met were encouraging to me. There was Danny, who for the longest time had a prob I LIVED in 307 and was it ever noisy! At night, the guys would have their stereos and TVs up so loud you would think you were in the same room with them when you were actually ten or twenty cells away. To this day 1 have no idea who the thief was, but I had quite a bit of merchandise I bought from the commissary that was ripped off. Even if I knew who it was I wouldnt mention his name becuase I never was and never will be a snitch. But dont ever believe that old line about honor among thieves, theres no such animal! Once I came back to my house, went to turn the light on and notheing happened. Somebody stole my light bulb! WHATS THE matter Bill . Y ou act like youre going to have a heart attack. Ah Ralph, first somebody hits for thirty bucks in groceries, now they take my light bulb. Ralph am I that easy to hit. Be- I HADNT mentioned this before, but there is a womens facility at this prison, segregated of course. Six women come over to the main building to go to either ABE (Adult Basic Education) or high school. There is also a college program where two other women attend classes. Everytime they come over, the inmates rant and if there is such a thing. Still, I rave, shistle, and cat-ca- ll had the pleasure of meeting and knowing some of these ladies, and what knowledge I gained from them, made my days easier to live through. fore you get ready for the long run, you should have an ample reserve of water in your system, so have an adequate amount to drink the day before. DONT DRINK anything with sugar in it for several hours before the race. The sugar triggers an insulin reaction, which may result in a temporary lowering of your blood sugar level. Premature exhaustion is likely to result. Two hours before the race, dont drink anything or you will be dashing for the woods to answer natures call. It takes 60 to 90 minutes for the body to process excess liquid through the kidneys. I ADOPTED two of the girls as my little sisters. One is Mary. She was at the prison for forgery and believe me to look at her you wouldnt know it. Eighteen, five foot, and some ways looked twelve. Then there was Seanna. Tall as me with short blonde hair. She was in for theft, but stayed only 90 days and was placed on probation. The court has a policy for first time offenders for certain cases, and rarely do they prosecute women. HOWEVER, YOU can drink quite a lot (10 ounces or more) five minutes before the start. The kidneys shut down after you start exercising to preserve fluid. A e water station is a good service to run- ners. Y our body loses liquid much more rapidly that it can be absorbed into the system from the stomach, so you need to drink a lot to minimize the loss. Start drinking at the first water MARY WAS a special case. All the guys wanted to make a play on her and the funny thing was, she wanted nothing to do with them. In the school foyer, classes broke every hour for ten minutes where students would take their break, but Mary would stay in the classroom and daydream about being with her children. She missed them desperately, it was written all over her face. She never made excuses for why she did what she did, another point in hgr favor. I knew when Mary went to the Board she would get a date and be on her way before long. I had confidence in her because she had confidence in herself. think you need. YOUR SYSTEM can absorb a full cup of liquid every 15 to 20 minutes. Walk, if necessary to make certain you get all the fluid down. If you are like me, you cant drink on the run. The best drink is water. You dont need to replace the electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium) during the run, since they are more concentrated during exercise. MORE WATER than electrolytes are removed during the run. Thus, as far as the cells are concerned, the body has an excess of electolytes. During prolonged periods of heavy sweating, the need to replace body water is greater than any immediate demands for electrolytes. If you want to drink ERG, Gatorade or whatever, be sure it is diluted so that it is almost water. Remember that sugar has to be diluted in the sto mach in order to be absorbed. If it is too concentrated, the stomach gets water from the tissues, and you can't afford that on a hot day. Cold days are another story. FRUIT JUICES and colas are no, no's. Stay away from carbonated drinks during the run. Drink as soon as possible but not quite as much as your stomach can tolerate. The drink should be as cold as possible, since that will help the bodys cooling process. WHATEVER your choice of liquid, including, water, you need to keep drinking to replace the large quantity of fluid your body will have lost. It is best to drink a little at a time over quite an extended period of time. Keep drinking until you have fairly clear urine. Your electrolytes will be replaced naturally through your diet of fresh fruits, cereals, vegetables, and milk products. Good luck! w.,-ter- , wm i RECENTLY learned at our annual American College of Sports Medicine meetings that there are some dangers for pregnant women in extreme heat. There is danger of damaging the fetus if the mother runs too long in the heat, as is often done in some races. Maintain good water intake whenever running in the heat and stay out of hot tubs and saunas. All raise the body temperature to the danger point during pregnancy. I WHILE WE are talking about hot weather running, a couple of additional tips are in order. Avoid an excess of highly salted food (good advice anytime) and three or four days before long runs or races have a large intake of water Finally, avoid high fibe foods a coupld of days prior to a race to revent runners di arrhea, caused largely by ihe fiber residue in the body.
