Show WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, JUNE 19, 1980 NORTH DAVIS LEADER, JUNE 19, 1980 East Layton Council t FI3fiie Meets; lien Budget To Be Adopted All By GARY real politicians. And when you see them in action, they stand out as true, politicians. R. BLODGETT Want to know what politics is all about? Well, 1 can tell you. 1 tried, I gave it may best shot, but Saturday night 1 was defeated. 1 didn't make it through the Davis County Republican Party Convention. BIT I'M not considering myself a loser not be a long shot. Its true that a couple of very fine candidates got the nomination to the Primary election in September, but what learned during my brief (about two months) campaign was a real 1 was a candidate for the Davis county r Commission, post. I knew it was going to be a challenge, a new experience and even a sacrifice. But to what extent, was really surprised. I DIDNT begin to comprehend, as a newcomer to politics, what campaigning for political office is all about. Im still amazed at what goes on behind the scenes. This is not to say, or even indicate, that there are any shenanigans that go on, although there could be, but theres only one way to describe politics. 1 r. four-yea- 1 POLITICS, IN general, is comprised of persons who live in a world of their own. Politics is for only those persons involved in politics and no one else! To be a part of politics you must, absolutely must, be a politician. Gov. Scott Matheson, Sen. Jake Garn, Rep. Gunn McKay, just to name a few, are The Layton LAYTON City Council is to consider creation of a new ordinance that would allow for construction of duplexes on two adjacent lots where each unit and .lot would be individually owned. THE ZONE would allow a lot line where normal side 'footage requiremtns from the : Jbuilding to the lot line wouldn't ;jbe required. That would per- tmit construction of a duplex or : 5double house on two smaller ; jlots. It would be limited to zero rtthree acre developments, jhowever. According to City Planner : iScott Carter, the lots would 4,000 square feet about half the size of :many residential lots in the Scity. That only they can save this country from complete disaster. I happen to be a registered Republican and usually vote Republican but that doesnt mean that some Democratic candidates are not just as qualified and capable candidates as the Republicans. BUT IF you attend a political convention of either party thats what you will hear. Only the candidates of that particular party are even worth considering for election. I know the other side of this political coin, too. Unity within the party, political control and on and on. When it gets to the bottom line, I think the public should go to the polls and vote for the candidate of their choice regardless of political affiliation. ble. But this isnt the case within the political circles. A politician votes for the candidate of his party regardless of the qualifications, experience or past achievements of the candidate on the other side of the slate. I know this is political suicide to write a column such as this, to speak out in the best way I know how, about my feelings of politics. MANY VOTERS do this because they are not politicians. They learn as much about the candidates as they can and vote their own convictions. Party delegates, too, will learn about their party candidates before voting in convention. Davis County Republicans held NO, IM NOT a sore loser. I had my mind made up to write this column before I was defeated last Saturday night. In fact, I told a few people that I was going to write the column and what, in essence, I was going to say. are just getting started with an 1,100 to 1,500 square foot home. With a 4,000 square foot lot that would put them into a 000. home for ta on individual lots) in other zoning. TO THAT Mr. Carter said, We dont want spot zoning. We dont want to give CONGRESSIONAL candidates (and even those not seeking electionrush home from Washingto to attend the conventions. It would be political suicide to miss. Its a hardship on the families of candidates and party officers and workers. Its a great big sacrifice on the part of everyone involved and each and every one involved in politics in any capacity should be congratulated. FOR ME, it was a pleasure to have been a candidate. I received encouragement from many, criticism from others. I met new people, good people, and I learned a lot from my experience. This provides a swimmer in distress immediate help and also protection from: sharks. Sharks are quite often very close to ocean swimmers, despite notions to the contrary. If this is doubted, try fishing for them from the surf. ITS ALWAYS shocking to read of persons who are unable to swim going out in boats without life preservers and many drown in this way every year.
