By DICK STUCKI Police training officials have announced that they want to ask the state legislature to pass a bill which would tack an extra fee onto fines to help raise more funds for better police training. THERE ARE 19 states which now have a law like this, and Carl Berensen, assistant director of the Utah Peace Officer Standards and Training, says he like the idea of making lawbreakers pay part of the costs of the police training. The assessment schedule that will be presented to the legislature would ask that there be an additional $2 to $4 per violation added to the existing fines. LARRY LUNNEN, Utah Public Safety Commissioner, says that if the new fines were passed by the legislature, the funds could be put to use in the training of police officers. Post officials have voiced concerns that officers are re- ceiving insufficient training and screening in Utah. The plan would be to change the police training course from the present 320-ho- course to a 400 hour course. IF THE state legislature pas- ses a new fine schedule it would certainly make an effect on many pocketbooks since it would include all vehicle violations as well as violations. non-vehic- le THE CODLING moth is the biggest pest to the grower of apple and pear trees. And the moths have started to fly earlier this year than any other year that records ' were kept for. to David According Whiting, USU Horticulturist, you should start your spraying this week. One of the r must successful sprays is Diazinon which is available from most garden centers. It is generally effective if you give complete coverage and spray every 10 to 14 days. . THE CODLING moth is the worst pest because it lays eggs which turn into the worms we all hate to find in apples and pears. It should be mentioned that the codling moth is not only one of the worst pests, but it is also one of the hardest to control. You should take any extra effort to help control this moth and spray regularly. L |
