Show 1 DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, APRIL 17, WEEKLY REFLEX NORTH DAVIS LEADER, APRIL 17, 1980 1980 wvr . -- r Track Action Continues ? Major College 77-6- over Viewmont. The Cubs fr won all but one of the running events while the Viewmont team used their depth in the field events. - (S) TRUTH IS though that theory is full of holes this year as not one of the players from the Bountiful championship team will be playing football at a four year school. None of the big boys thought they had any major prospects, or at least thats what they are implying with their non recruiting look. That means either the Braves got some great coaching from their people who got the best out of them or they simply had eleven or so good high school players without the true superstar. i Professional basketball players Allen Bristow (left) and Ben Pouquet (kneeling) give some pointers to Matt Holland. The two Jazz players live in Davis County and want to become involved in the community so are offering the youth a summer basketball camp this summer in June. PRO CAMP THERE COULD be another factor, the Utah schools dont really look at the local products that much. Okay lets be frank about it, BYU, Utah and Utah State are looking for the big physical people but a school like Weber State would do well to recruit some of the local talent. For years the students at Weber State have been saying that they would just as soon lose with local products as all those so called super stars from California. Thats not saying the Utah boys would lose but the story Weber gives is that Utah prepsters arent as good as those others but the others dont win and they certainly dont bring the fans to the ballgames either. fessional basketball players from the Utah Jazz who make their home in Davis County are offering a basketball camp during the summer in an effort to become involved in the community and also to offer the fundamentals of basketball to the youth of the area. ALLAN BRISTOW and Ben Pouquett, Track Features Top Performers THE BRAVES dont have the numbers on their team that others have but they also have something that few schools have, a returning state champion. When a school has a pure runner the main problem facing the coaching staff is deciding which event to place them in. Such is the case with Coach Mitch Willey of the Braves who is faced with the problem of which race to enter Steve Tueller in each meet. STEVE WON the state 4A championship a year ago in the half mile with a fine clocking of 1:56.0 minutes. Already this season he has won meets in Utah and Idaho and is well on his way to defending his title. He is also slated to run in the mile and the quartermile. He is the type of runner that is going to excell in any event that his coaches place him in. Steve is one of eight seniors who have been on the track program for several years and each of them are capable of placing in every meet. Justin Nelson is a great pole vaulter who can go around the 13 foot mark which makes him a favorite in the region. JIM PERKINS will run when his baseball duties allow him to do so and he is slated for action in the sprints. Some coaches have noted that he could have been one of the best tracksters around if he had both standouts on the Utah Jazz team of the Btfl. top notch individuals who Two pro- BOUNTIFUL IF THE players at Bountiful are good enough to win a state crown one would have to think they would be good enough to play in college. Someone missed the boat, these guys are proven winners. It just goes to show that even winning a state ship doesnt warrant much in these parts. could very well place high in both region and state. the pros that By DAVE W IGHAM concentrated on the sport. He is a standout on the baseball team. Jim will run either the 100, 220 or quartermile for the Braves. Clark Mabey is continuing his fine athletic career at the school competing in the discus event where his best throw ins around 140 feet. Bountiful is strong in the discus with a couple of fine juniors joining Clark in the event. Mike Woodbury has thrown the discus 130 feet while Terry Ferrell has a toss of 125 feet to his credit. NBA, have put together this camp with the idea of helping youngsters in the area get a better understanding of the game. The camp is for players ages 8 to 17 with the idea of the camp being that these players have never played the game before. In the camp we plan to stress the fundamentals of the game. We plan on dissecting the games and letting them see how it is supposed to be played. There are too many players in college and even in THREE MORE juniors who are point getters include Darrel Allen who runs the distance races, Dave Barney who is strong in the half mile and Matt Dalton who has thrown the javelin 140 feet. Three sophomores are also high on their coaches list for getting points. They are Jim Baker in the distance races, Lex Brown who will be in the sprints and the long jump and Eric Nelson who is entered in both the pole vault and high jump. BOUNTIFUL probably won't win the region meet because of the lack of depth but dont be surprised to see some top performers in individual events come from the Braves team. the basic fundamentals down noted Allan Bristow. ALLAN HAS been involved camps since he went to college in one aspect or another and he brings ten years experience with him into this his first own camp. Ben has in basketball been involved with such camps for about seven years so between them both they have a great basis for the camp. Allan was more blunt about the camp when he noted, Were not here to make professionals out of the players but to help them make their team for next year. in- struction the camp will feature films which will cover basics, along with some highlight films from college and professional ranks. The fee also covers the booklets, certificates, contests such as one on one and foul shooting and the use of other recreational facilities. Cleaning Special!! By DAVE WIGHAM - Darts. Woods Cross has a record for 10 points from seven games. The Vikings are two games behind the Wildcats and one behind the Braves. A team earns two points for a win and one for a tie. 1 1 Ice Going Off: Trophy Fishery Warm winds, melting the ice on Flaming Gorge Reservoir, are uncovering one of the best trophy trout fisheries in the West, according to Utah Division of Wildlife officials. The camp itself will run from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. BOTH BEN and Allan noted that they werent just guests that would show up a couple of minutes on three of the days. Well be there all day for the entire week, Ben added. They really seem concerned about the quality of the camp and are trying to make it something worthwhile for everyone involved. They have chosen a time to run their camp that doesnt conflict with the other various basketball camps and would like to encourage all the local players and athletes in the area to attend. trout weighing 33 pounds and 10 ounces. Most fishermen will never hook one of these trout, but many large trout are caught each spring. Flaming Gorge is stocked each year by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, Wyoming Game and Fish and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. In 1979, these agencies stocked nearly 3.5 million trout in the Gorge. Some of these fish are lost through natural mortality, but many will be inch catchable trout this year. Catchable trout record-breakin- g 10-1- 4 are easier for the average fisherman to catch, but there is always a chance a new state record will be on the line. Its Best FISHING HAS improved because warming water temperature has caused the crappie and largemouth bass to move into shallow water in preparation to spawn. Once this response is triggered, the fish are more active, aggressive and easier to catch. Crappie have started to spawn, but the water is still a bit too cold gathered in previous years, indicates that during the month of April fishermen have the for the largemouth bass.
