IT MAY have helped him in that department, for sure, but for Scott, ROTC has become far more. In fact, he says there are things taught in the program that cant be found anywhere else and thats not just military-relate- d material, either.' In the regular class they teach you how to develop leadership abilities, management and how to communicate with people, he says. It isnt like the average class. You join an organization (when enrolling in the class). Its an opportunity to take leadership positions. We have about eight staff positions plus commander in the whole unit. PROBABLY THE the first year a student can become an element leader and flight sergeant. Sometimes that posi from serving an LDS mission to Guatemala. Mrs. Pruden has one other son, Scott. Mr. and Mrs. Alvin D. Kinsey were guests of Mr. and Co-L- t. Commanders Scott Blye and Paula Bourke are justly proud of the accomplishments of their drill team in walking away with top honors in recent competition and term the entire program one that can benefit any student who participates. ROTC UNIT TOP-FLIG- HT tion would put him in charge of 35. We do things that most others never have the chance to do, he continues. Such experiences would include watching a refueling mission to parasailing to repelling. Those activities arent required of students, he says, but theres a lot for the student who can only attend class sessions. WHEN SGT. (John) COM. BLYE, who rotates commanding duties with Paula Bourke, says those entering ROTC need make no committment after completion of high school. He has received four nominations to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. Colo., and is awaiting word. Should he receive an appointment, he must complete five years duty after academy graduation. n teaches leadership, he has a subject in mind where he has the cadet go up to the podium and the cadet should.:, tell himf about a subject. Each,;, class member then has a" chance to express ideas about the subject. The class is one where you cant just sit there and pass, Lt. Com. Blye says. In addition to Sgt. Deroian, Col. Jay Hess oversees the program of 95 cadets, including about 20 coeds. The majority of students live in Clearfield Highs boundaries but some are drawn from Layton and Davis High areas and transfer to the school to participate. Some students at Clearfield High and elsewhere make fun of ROTC participants, often because of the strict hair standards enrollees must follow. To that Scott SayS; To me, it doesn't bother me. Five years from now they may say that (ridicule) as they're working in a gas station while he w ill be well into a military career with a future, and other ROTC graduates will be further into successful careers partly due to ROTC training. ONE OF the extra activities that has gained some fame for the ROTC unit is the drill team, requiring two hours of practice a w eek after school for partici-pant- Mrs. Carl Brockbank in Salt Lake City w here they attended the Highland High School dance club spring musical where Susie Fillmore participated. About half go on to military careers. MARK SHEHAN Earns Eagle Miide Boas? After reading the article in last week's Davis News Journal by Doneta Gatherum on East Layton, I would like to respond with some Hash and Rehash. 1 Scott comes from a military family and notes that he lived 2 in places before settling in Clearfield nine years ago. His father is now retired from active service. 10-1- nifer Whittaker, Jennifer Mott, Kari Lamoreaux, studentbody president at Westminster College in Salt Lake City. She is a senior student and will be graduating this spring. Mr. and Mrs. Steven Treadwell of Salt Lake City were Easter guests of Mr. and Mrs. Rex Hansen. Clearfields efforts FIRST, I have never read a newspaper public opinion article that was so biased. The comments were basically geared against Chief Davis and feelings of sympathy for Mayor Yeates. I do not know n what she considers a out onviouxiv she never contacted one of at least people against Mayor Yeates' decision. I understand that legally Mayor Yeates was able to do what he did, but we also have to look at the spirit of the law and also what were supposed to have in this country, a democracy w ith a government for the people. It seems to me that here in East Layton our government is for just a few in a certain click. cross-sectio- 30-4- 0 The Kaysville Jr. High high honor roll is as follows: Klews KaswfiQO Shel-le- e Dyer, Lucy Mickelson, Michelle Hill, Cheryl Card, Michelle Noorda, Kristin Wright, Jason Nielson. Laurie Lundstrom. I DO not understand how a mayor can approve of a man, swear him into office, and then a few weeks later after only speaking to the man twice have such a personality conflict to try and find a technicality to use to get Chief Davis out of ALSO FARRON Bodily. Amy Price, Michele Washburn, Colleen Cook, Gordon Streiff, Stephanie Hess, Kimilee Anderson, Mary Ellen Marx, Heather Hamilton, Holly Smith. High honor roll for eighth grade are Steve Sargent. Katrina Allen, Jane Kraczek. Ealine Oakeson, Gretchen Adams. Brett Clay, Tammy Murdock, office. Chief Davis has sworn he is innocent of any wrong doing in his position as police chief, and is willing to take a lie detector test. Yet Mayor Yeates cannot show the citys people any documented or substantiated information to prove any terrible w rong doing on the part of Chief Davis. The newspaper article cited a comment that the local people at the meeting did not represent a majority of the city's population, but I would say a petition signed a few months back of over 200 signatures is a sizeable number for Chief Davis. I WOULD also like to respond on the people's comments of the mayor's and being tried and hung without a jury . I w ouldn't call his actions at the meeting A mayor as that of should know how to respond to and discuss issues with the citizens. All he did was sit there and say Chief Davis will not be reappointed," nothing more, and let Councilman Nalder do most of the talking for him. The mayor had already tried and hung Chief Davis without a fair trial before he came to the meeting. Someone commented that self-contr- local supporters at the meeting were not of East Layton and that a calling committee" had been invited to the meeting to try and force the mayor to change his mind. This is a big fallacy. I am a resident of East Layton and I know that 99 percent of the local supporters were of East Layton, and I know that they were not of a "calling committee. I AM sure that as a police chief. Dave Davis was not totally perfect in his job as there is always room for improvement in any job. But it has not been proven to me that he had done anything so bad to be dismissed and treated as he has been by the mayor. If it could be proven I'd be the first to agree with the mayor and so would others. There have been many men hurt in societies where there is malicious, unproved allegations and gossip. I believe that that is what we have here in East Layton, and it is tearing the town apart. If there are charges of misconduct on the part of Chief Davis the mayor should bring them to the attention of the citizens so we can get this city back to normal.
