Show t WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, FEBRUARY 14, 1980 NORTH DAVIS LEADER. FEBRUARY 14, 1980 r Beehive Racing Results over Cutter and chariot races for the Beehive State Racing A Hi DANE WIGHAM B y In watching last week's region wrestling tournaments throughout the county one thing that stood out m my nnnd was the number of injuries. l' ESEEN these events before but last week 1 TO NAME a few Blaine Ray of Viewmonl suffered a dislocated shoulder. Russ Hammer of Bountilul was cut above the eye and went to the hospital. Maik late of Woods Cross had a neck injuty and Kevin Freestone of Viewmont reinjured a knee. In the case of three of the w restlers they had already won enough matches to qualify for the state meet but in the Ray case the injury ended his season. SOME PEOPLE pointed to the fact that wiesllets are getting bigger, stronger and quicker as one explanation. True these guys, while big and bulky . demonstrated some exceptional speed on the mat. Another explanation was from a coach who noted that many of the holds and moves leally put a strain of muscles, especially up around the shoulders. THEN ONE coach. Stcv e Sanderxon ol View mont. saw the officiating as a cause. "I know in the case ol Ray I. the official should have stopped it. and could have before the injury occured. When a wrestler is slammed to the mat in an illegal hold, twice, something is going to happen to that wrestler." He went on to add that it is a judgment call by the officials, but obviously with a separated shoulder to show for it someone used poor judgment. It was near heartbreaking to see the likes ot Blaine Rayl who has worked hard for several months to be out of the state tournament due to an injury. These guys all work hard and when the region was over and some didn't make the event in Salt Lake City this week, it was sad to see the parents trying to console their sons. WRESTLING is a lough sport, it takes a special breed of athlete to compete. They are often overlooked by the students and media alike, not in the limelight like the basketball club. But to these wrestlers, my hat goes off to really comes through. you, your dedication and Congratulations to those who competed in this rugged sport and good luck to all of those wrestling in the state meet this week. self-desi- Swimming Pool Is Open Again - CLEARFIELD After two months of being shut down for repairs, the municipal swimming pool is open again.
