Show WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, FEBRUARY 7, 1980 NORTH DAVIS LEADER, FEBRUARY 7, 1980 Vikings Unlucky Woods Cross Wildcats Seek Win Over Highland Rams Bv DAVE WIGHAM second shot. Viewmont beat them by one and then last week to top it all off. the W'est club beat them by one in overtime. That makes their four loses by a grand total of eight points Assist Coach Mike Hall of Bountiful noted "They could very well be WOODS CROSS The best thing the people connected with the basketball program at Woods Cross could do right now is to forget the first go round and concentrate on getting revenge on a coupje of folks. THIS FRIDAY they can do a lot for themselves in that bid for a state berth as they host the Highland Rams. The Wildcats had a good game on the Ram floor only to lose on a last ditch effort. Going into the Tuesday game the Rams were in league action and facing 3 W'est while the Cats were and playing Bountiful. For the Cats to have much of NO ONE deserves the luck the Cats ran into during the first go round. Here they are at the turning point and they have only one win to show for it. depending on their Tuesday night game with Bountiful. Look at the figures though. 1 hey lost to the Braves by four in the first game. Highland beat them by two on a last Davis Darts To Host Bear River By DAVE WIGHAM an injury, has been Hunter Gree and good shooter from the outside. He teams with the likes of Dale Jensen and Austin Andersen. Davis ranks second in the league, both in standings and points scored and given up. The Bears have been rough on themselves giving up a lot of points. They had a great shooter in Miller but the big man has since suffered an injury and without him in the lineup the Bears don't have a true big man. KAYSVILLE Even though their opponents havent won a league ballgame this season the Davis team should not take the Bear River club for granted. THAT ALMOST happened last week when the Bears took on the Ben Lomond crew. The Scots built up a big lead then began to substitute freely only to see the Bears pull within a couple of points in the closing minutes. They haven't won a game but they are by no means pushovers. DAVIS IS gearing for their battle with Ogden in a week, if they start thinking about the Tigers too soon they just might find themselves tw o games behind instead of one. The game is in Kaysville where the Darts are tough. Add to that the feeling around the league that the Darts have a habit of playing up to the level, or down, to their opponents and you quickly see the reason the Darts cant take Bear River lightly. a shot at a state berth they'll need at least a split from this week. Six loses w ill be almost great to watch. If the inside clogs up then the guards take over and in the Cats. Lowe and Kevin Nitzel plus the Maxwell kids and Jeff Barlow of the Rams, the fans w ill see some people w ho can fill it up. BOTH ENTER the game with one loss, that is if both w on their Tuesday games, and on top of the league standings. Both only need a couple of wins to gain a state berth and both w ould like to wrap up that invitation. The lone Viking loss came last week when they were knocked from the unbeaten ranks by a good Highland club. Hot shooting by the Rams and a rare off shooting night by the Vikes were the difference in the contest. THE CATS have been turning to Dale Christiansen and John Kristensen lately and w ill more than likely use them this week. Also ready are Terren Hallows. Wes Johnson and Reed Call, all of which have seen some action. Coach Baker has tried many combinations and will try more in an attempt to find the winning one. These Cats have a lot of pride and know they are facing a tough road but they must also feel that their luck is bound to change. This week is as good a time as any. They have proven they are tough at home and should use that home floor to their advantage. show, against South they couldn't hit from the outside and lost the game but then they View- mont and they won. They were especially hot from the charity stripe where they connected on 31 attempts. RANDY Rawlings is their big gun. He had 24 last week and will probably match up with the Cats top man Mark Earnshaw. Mark is a great player inside despite giving up inches. This week though he is 'Rurto' WIGHAM BOUNTIFUL The way things have been going around the league, this week's matchup with rivals Viewmont and Bountiful on the Vikes home floor could very well decide the championship of the region. gets. These two should be IN THEIR first meeting the Cats didn't have much trouble with the touted Ram press but hit a cold spell. Indeed they have the people to handle the press, like Roger Lowe who could break a press by himself. The Rams are a hot and cold team, as their record would couldn't miss against Bv DAVE as close in height as he ever impossible to bounce back from. Meanwhile the Rams could take control of third place with a couple of wins. - SENIOR PAIL Hansen summed up the loss for the entire team. "1 think we were overconfident, thinking if South could beat them we could if. we showed up. It proved to us that we have to play well against everyone in the league to win." The Braves lone loss in Braves Square Off league action came on the first meeting between these two in January when the Vikes won by six points. Since then the Braves have won all their games including impressive road wins over West and Highland. ALTHOUGH both coaches play it down this is the determining factor in deciding who gets the key to the city. Both coaches have noted that their plavers really don't get caught up in the key thing but that the rivalry is the big thing. In the first Vike victory sophomore John White came off the bench to spark his club. He since injured his ankle and has seen limited action but is expected to be ready for the Braves' clash. JUNIOR KYLE Morrell had the hot hand in the Highland game picking up 15 while Rich Downs scored 13 and Paul Hansen It) in a losing effort. Bountiful's Jim Perkins plaved his best game at the school, according to his coach, in the win over South as the speedy senior ended the night with 28 points. The Braves displayed a well balanced attack as Jeff Bradford had 17 and Scott Rampton 14 followed by Brad Jacox with 13. BOINIIITL wasn't reads for the White kid in the first outing but this time around Coach Mike Hall is expecting the mov e and is reads to counter. Viewmont hasn't plaved well as a team for a couple ol weeks and would like to put one together this week. Lineups will leatuie Brad Gibson. Mike Holder Morrell. IT USED to be when these two dubs met the home floor was the big thing but recently those ideas have changed. Remember a vear ago both clubs won a game apiece bv 20 points, on ihe opposing floor. Viewmont won on the Braves' floor so the home floor advantage doesn't seem to hold true an v more. Norm Parrish was a thorn in the Braves side in iheir first meeting and he has been placing well. Perkins has been scoring well latelv and these two could go head to head in this battle. Parrish. Hansen. Downs. Seolt Barlow or While for Vikes and Perkins. Bradlord. Jacox. Ramplon. Claik Mabev.
