Pedestrian: Yes, and some of you motorists drive as if you owned your cars. If we had planned it that way, it wouldnt have worked, but it just happened. After the family reunion in Blanding, three automobiles with assorted family members went their separate directions, which was north. Blanding closes tight on Sunday and that includes restaurants, so we all stopped in Monticello for breakfast. WE FOUND out as we piled out of our cars within two minutes of each other that we had all done the door rattling, driving around to find a place to eat. When I grew up there, I knew Monticello is a long way from anyplace else on earth, and on a hungry Sunday morning, if there's one place serving breakfast, grab it and dont complain. It was almost empty which didnt surprise me what with the local opinion of people who eat in restaurants on Sunday, but we were hungry. Later I was to wonder if it was empty because the locals knew better. THE WAITRESS was prompt in taking our orders and she wrote diligently. But she frowned quite a lot with a worried look. I ordered eggs over easy with orange juice. Warren wanted French toast as usual, Jon and Carol asked for bacon and eggs. Then the waitress went to the other table where my orsisters and brother-in-ladered fancy things with ham and scrambled eggs and hot chocolate. THE GIRL went away, looking at what she had written with considerable concentration. We took up with our visits where we had left off the day before, commenting on the family reunion and how everyone had aged and how well someof them were holding up considering. WE HAD quite a few rela- tives to discuss, so we didnt pay much attention for about a half hour to the breakfast we hadnt seen. Men seem to be more concerned about food than women when it gets on toward eleven of a Sunday morning and not even orange juice for sustenance. He began to mumble, but we hushed him, saying she is a nice girl and she will come back. Another fifteen minutes and we all began to wonder if maybe the management had changed its mind and gone out of business without telling us. THEN WE began to hear raised voices coming from back there somewhere. got up and stuck his head through the door which had swallowed our Brother-in-la- waitress. He came back grinning with a very malicious look. You people expecting food here? THATS THE general idea. Do you know something we should hear about? Far as can see, the kitchen staff is that girl and a I boy who looks to be about twelve. Theyre arguing about' how to get the bacon crisp. AS I said, its an awful long way from Monticello to anywhere. After discussion, we decided to wait and take our chances on limp bacon. About the time we had almost decided it would be. quicker to drive to Moab, the girl came back through the door carrying plates. She went to an empty table, of which there were plenty, and put the plates down. Then she took out the notes she had written when we gave our orders and she frowned some more. the laughter subdued until we left the establishment, fed. The natives probably reported to the local gendarme that they were serving intoxicating beverages in that place and on Sunday morning too because there were three cars full of tourist types leaning against the cars doubled up laughing. When we could talk, Warren asked, Mom, how did you figure out how to pay the check? I said, Son, m a situation like that, if you ask questions, youre just going to disturb the delicate balance of sanity. She wrote a check and I paid it. Could Hitler Have Taken Moscow? Historian John Lukacs has written a worthwhile book about the last European war, which he dates from 1939 to 1941 (when it became a world war). IT HAS impressed some columnists, like George Will, - who quotes from it to the effect that Hitler could have taken Moscow with one parachute regiment in October of 194 1.
