Show I WEEKLY HhFLhX DAVIS NEWS JUUHNAL, SEPTEMBER 27, 199 Clearfield Seeks Region Win N By DAVE WIGHAM - CLEARFIELD One has to feel a little bit sorry for the Clearfield football team this seasoa For any high school team to get going they have to get a couple of wins under the Greatest Athlete belts for that street thing Is The On known as confidence. Hay THE FIRST week out the Falcons downed Viewmont and started to build up their confidence a little. Then they ran into Bountiful, ranked as the best in the state in 3A, and By DAVE WIGHAM lost. Looks like the start of nett year will be a great one for this reporter and wife. The first little Wig will arrive. THIS GOT me thinking about the kind of like to raise. Then the Clearfield club beat a strong Davis club the following week and started to build themselves up again. But last week they ran into a child I would For sure the kid will run the hundred yard dash in about 9.8 seconds. Dont want to get too greedy and set a world record or anything like that. Maybe for quickness the kid could run a 4.4 seconds in the 40 yard dash. strong Bonneville club, ranked as the second best club in the E Falcons needed some play. Should be able to shoot with either hand, dribble behind the back, between the legs, around the head or anything else that theyll be doing in basketball by that .time. All this and score 30 a game. IN BASEBALL, the kid will do it all, pitch, catch, play the infield or the outfield. Havent decided if itll have to throw with both hands yet or not. The kid will have to hit around .400 and have a pair of cannons for arms. The kid will steal all the bases in sight, afterall did you notice how fast itll be. Should be able to get a double out of a bunt at least. THE GRANDPARENTS would disown me if the kid wasnt involved in soccer. Should be able to kick with either foot, be able to juggle for hours on end without the ball touching the ground, and score with its head from anywhere on the field. This kid will be a coachs dream, probably know more about the game than the coach. Run the ballclub with the poise and experience of a veteran despite starting for the high school team as a freshman. LOOKS LIKE the kid has its life planned for it. all the way. Wait a minute though. What if the kid is a boy! Sports Club Champion The Davis Park Ladies Golf Association held their two day Club Championship in August with Vauna Taylor taking high honors. Other winners in the tournament are as follows: third; Barbara Hughes, fourth; Marlene Burnett, thirty yard field goal besides adding all the extra points. By DAVE WIGHAM - KAYSVILLE Whenever the Ogden High Tigers come into town to play the Darts in football, the best word to describe the action would have to be an all out war. TWO football THESE powers simply dont like each other. There are few teams around that each would like to beat more than the other. No one really knows the reason for these feelings but no one disputes that they are there. Davis started off their region campaign a week ago with an impressive win over Bear River, while the Tigers were getting beaten badly by a strong Logan crew. OGDEN RELIES on a strong defensive unit that took it on the chin in the loss to Logan as the usually tough Tigers gave up 42 points to the Grizzlies. The Tigers seemed to have the Logan crews number in the first half as they only allowed the high scoring Logan offense to 14 points. The Grizzlies gave up more points to Ogden in the first half than tliey had given . up all year with 10 points. Ogden ended the night with 17 points against one of the top defenses in the region which shows they can put points up on the board. Quarterback Jay MacDonald has a strong throwing arm as he demonstrated with a nine yard scoring pass to his favorite target Kenny Bennett. Kicker Roger Frischk-nec- t is also a great offensive threat as he connected on a y&alhi MacDONALD connected with Dave Hoggan and Marlon Frazier to score the final Tiger points. In their three previous outings this year the Darts have become better known for their running attack with Brent Hatch, Lynn Adams and Scott Smith but this past game they proved they can score through the air when they want to. SENIOR JEFF Emery connected on two scoringpasses in the Bear River win, one of thirteen yards to Brent Hatch and the other a twenty yarder to Lynn Adams. Before you count out the running attack though the Darts did utilize a powerful ground attack to set up two other scores. With Hatch, Adams and Smith carrying the ball and people up front like Warden, DeJong and third; Donnette Simonson, THE GOLF season is coming to a close with still more tournaments in September and the awards luncheon being planned for October. ad- the Bountiful Ice Arena. Skaters from both the Utah Figure Skating Club (UFSC) and the Intermountain Figure Skating CluL (IFSC) par- ticipated. The tests were ..sanctioned by the United States Figure Skating Association (USFSA) and conducted according to USFSA rules and regulations. Both Utah clubs are charter members of the USFSA. SKATERS WHO passed tests were Jessica Berenson, Kurston Kranz, and Linda and Phillip Kennedy of Salt Lakers. THE BALL will be inMhe air. Both clubs come into the game looking for their first win in the new Region Five. They have played one common opponent during those two region battles and both lost to Bountiful by the identical score of good game Braves. not just in league action. Their defense has been great in previous outings but the lack of offense has put the pressure on their D, who at quarterback they will move junior Kyle Morrell to a wide receiver to take advantage of the his talents. Running-wis- e Vikes need more help from the line people, who also need to give the passer some more time. At times the line is good but need to be more consistent. Viewmont is hungry for that first win but South is no iksy task for anyone. The winner of the game has a chance to catch the three leaders of the league for a spot in the state tournament but the loser will have three defeats which could very well be fatal for any hopes of post season action. fourth and short yardages. The week before they held West to one first down in the second half. They have a good defense. 10-- SOUTH HAS Come to live and die by the passing game with senior quarterback Doug Tonge processing a great throwing arm. Last week in their heartbreaking loss to Highland this talented senior threw for two touchdowns and ran for the third. The Cubs will put the ball up most of the time, in fact three out of four plays will be passes. When they do go on the ground they have a good runner in tailback Phillip Matuato. VIEWMONT IS still looking against the RUMOR IS that with Dolder have been on the field more than their coaches would like them to be. In their loss to the Bountiful club last week their defense arose on two occasions in the first half to stop the Braves on THE is DEFENSE their by spearheaded linebackers Brad Leavitt, Craig Young and Frank Put- nam. Senior Rob Moosman, a starting backer, was lost for the season last week when he suffered tom ligaments in his knee during practice. TIM GOOCH continues to be the most productive Falcon thus far. Mike Crawford has the most of the ceptions group which also consists of Brook Hicks, the fine quarterback of the Falcons. September, according to the calendar, is the last summer month. The days, until the 23rd, are still longer than nights; warm weather usually predominates. BUT ONE detects a change in the suns light, in the air, in the trees and fields a change which is summers good-byThe first cool nights and clear, Braves in the second half with senior Mike Dolder at the helm. Mike was evasive all night, several times he eluded would-b- e tacklers in the backfield and either passed or ran for good gainers. Tight end Paul Hansen also had a - e. on offense. He is one of the better running backs with his combination of speed and strength. Kevin Neville, Robert Hammer and Eric Naylor are getting better on the line with each ballgame and they need to have a good effort for Clearfield to win. Defensively the Clearfield bunch had an off night against the Lakers last game, but they have seemed to Braves To Face Woods Cross In Homecoming Game By DAVE WIGHAM - BOUNTIFUL This Friday Woods Cross will travel up the hill to battle Bountiful for the first time ever in varsity football. THE CATS couldnt have picked a worse time to try the Braves in football than this year. Consider these facts about the Braves. They sport a perfect record on the year, are ranked number one in the 0 state and their first team defense hasnt given up a single point all season. INDEED THE Braves have looked good all season in earning their number one rating. Besides their great defense, the Bountiful club can score in so many ways with their offense which features a good running game and a good passing attack. If the offense does bog down then they simply call on Jim Perkins, who is one of the best kickers in the state, to kick a field goal. Before you throw in the towel though, the Woods Cross club has a lot of talent on their club also and they arent intimidated by the Braves and will be going after them with everything they have. BOUNTIFUL isnt taking their opponents lightly either, as one player noted, We know any team can beat another in this league so we play them one at a time. Some thought the Braves would look past the Wildcats and straight at West who they meet next week. Not so. Woods Cross never did get untracked in their loss a week ago to West and they are anxious to get that first league victory under their belts. Several times though they did get some receivers wide open for good gainers and theyll probably go to the air against the Braves. FOR KEVIN Nitzel to get the time to throw though, the September Offensively the Vikings moved well against the Cats line of Jason Whitney, Mark Tate and Jack Williams will have to keep the Braves out of the backfield. This is easier said than done. The Braves like to play games up front with their linebackers. According to their coaches it was the play of Curtis Sampson and Tim Murray, the outside linebackers, that helped shutout the Vikings. When the time is there Nitzel will be looking for Reed Call, Terrin Hallows, Mark Earnshaw or Eddy Kent who give the Cats a good receiving corps. Theyll be going against a much improved secondary of Jim Perkins, Russ Jensen and Mike Haslam, who seem to get better every game. DEFENSIVELY the Cats will have their hands full, stopping the running of Rob Cottle and Mike Hollingsworth who seem to alternate with each other in great games. If the run isnt there then the Braves quarterback Kevin Kott will go upstairs to either Perkins or junior tight end Mike Woodbury. Teams have to respect Perkins speed and that leaves Woodbury free to roam. Emotions will run high simply because the Cats want to win this first-evmeeting between the two clubs while the Braves want to preserve their number one rating and to please their homecoming crowd. er bounce back the following week. Sky View will find the going tough this week. ALTHOUGH they sport only a mediocre record somebody thinks the Falcons have a good ballclub since they have them rated number nine in the rankings. History notes this year the Clearfield team wins every 2-- 2 other would have to be favored but dont count the Wildcats out. The outcome of this contest could very well be decided in the trenches where the Braves pride themselves as one of the best lines around with Clark Mabey, Alan Meldrum, Curtis Sampson and Lane Christiansen. Woods Cross will have to come up with a great effort to win, but they are capable of doing it. Bountiful is ready and waiting for them. history rime For By PETE FRITCHIE Its hard to argue with success, and Danny Ozark and the Philadelphia Phillies have certainly enjoyed it these last three years. But the Phillies exhibit the same pitching weakness today that has cost them a trip to the World Series in the past. THOSE BIG, tall throwers serve up too many gopher balls. The staff as this is written has the worst ERA of any team in the National League. One cant win a OVER ON the defensive side of the ledger the Darts were playing well in holding the Bears to a single touchdown. Ward, Hyde, Emery, Warden and Lance Hill all played well for first year head man Ward Sawley. Ogden needs the win to stay in contention for the region title while the Darts need to stay with the Logan crew. Game is a night affair on the city scribes take that calm exterior for dullness. Not so. Ozark knows his baseball. But, in this writer's opinion, he has stuck too long with who havent players delivered.
