Teachers Hold The Key To A Renewal Of Hope For Future BOUNTIFUL Teachers hold the key to a renewal of hope for the future, some 1,500 Davis County educators were told last week. MEETING IN their annual teachers convention last week at Viewmont High School, they were told by Board of Education Pres. Lucile C. Reading, You hold - .something intangible you might call it fire at times to ice at other times, you call it future. She said teachers hold a key to making the future in their dealings with the thousands of Davis District students. "What we need is a renewal of hope and you can give it. They hold the future. The teachers are the key ingredients in the schools." NOTING THAT no one is going to improve education except educators was incoming Davis Education Association Pres. Speaking said, Just giving people the word does not create change. It is not an change strategy. Two conditions must be there must be a felt present need and the involvement of a respected other for change to occur," he said, tb There are several drugs which are effective because they work specifically to reduce inflammation, and the pain and swelling which accompany inflammation. Of these, Dr. Ward said, aspirin is the most frequently prescribed. Because it is such a common household remedy for headache pain, many people find it hard to believe that it can relieve the severe effects of arthritis, But, when taken in appropriate doses it does, because it reduces inflammation as well as pain. TAKING ASPIRIN for arthritis is not the same as taking it for a headache, Dr. Because Ward continued. people vary in their tolerance for aspirin, it should be taken as for arthritis only prescribed by and under the supervision of a physician. Many people cannot take aspirin at all, and must rely on other prescribed medications. Several new Scoffield Visits Hong Kong Navy Capt. Gary A. Scoffield, son of Ethel A. Of these, ibuprofen, tolmetin, naproxen and sulindac, are agents fenoprofen, which have been found effec- tive in reducing joint swelling, pain, duration of stiffness and disease activity. Their most common side effect isi gastrointestinal upset. ANOTHER medication, phenylbutazone, has also been found effective in relieving pain and reducing swelling, morning stiffness and disease activity. Dr. Ward said that- the most serious side effect caused by usage of this, drug is bone marrow depression. Other re- side effects include fluid tention which can result in weight gain, rash, peptic ulceration and liver damage. Certain other drugs not specifically types, have been found to be useful in treating rheuma- arthritis (the most serious form of arthritis). THE beneficial effects of gold cannot begin to be realized for at least 12 to 14 weeks after the first injection. Dr. Ward reported. There are side effects, with the most common being a skin rash. An alternative to gold is Because of potential toxidity, it should only be prescribed by physicians who are familiar with its use. THOSE WHO do not respond to this treatment are sometimes given hydroxychloroquine, an drug which has been shown to decrease the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. The most common side effects are skin rash and keratitis (deposits in the eye). The most potent of all the drugs available are the steroids, such as cortisone, Dr. Ward said. They can bring about sensational reduction of pain and inflammation m a matter of hours." toid Studies with gold salts have shown that gold is effective in many patients with rheumatoid arthritis who do not respond to other treatment. MW yrotnita BUT steroids, particularly if taken daily and in high dosage over long periods of time, have been found to cause a variety of serious side effects, sometimes worse than the disease. Therefore, steroids taken orally are being cautiously prescribed by physicians. However, direct injection of steroids into a particularly troublesome joint is helpful to provide temporary relief. NO DRUG yet developed and used in treating arthritis actually cures the disease, according to Dr. Ward. However, the commonly prescribed drugs do help reduce pam and inflammation or otherwise slow down and control the symptoms, thus providing relief for the patient. The Arthritis Foundation currently publishes and makes available to physicians a series of leaflets which discuss the medications utilized in treating the various rheumatic diseases. Dr. Ward said. He added that people interested in more information on prescribed drugs for arthritis should consult their family doctors, or contact the Utah Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation.
