They have been getting the raves from everyone and are rated in the top ten on the polls. They have an unblemished league mark They are even playing on their own floor. Somehow though all this means nothing to the Layton people, they only know they have a ball game that they would love to wm. They would like nothing better than to spoil a perfect record, should the Falcons still be undefeated by Friday. Clearfield is known for their and half-coudefenses which type pressing means the opponents better have some good guards to handle the pressure. As luck would have it the Lancers are blessed with three of the best in the league, thats right, full-cou- Ht. Layton (B) pin Luce (G) as did Tod Overton. Here are the results ol the meets last week as reput md by the coaches. 98. 155 Overton (V) dec Dick (B) title at 185, hes undefeated this year and considered one of the best in the state at his weight. Dave Shuldberg took home third place as did J Grant Snow in the 98 pound class. Heavyweight Reed Smith took fourth in his class - rt rt of them. Carl Woodward, Ben Bubak and Rick Snow all know the pressure three "D that the Falcons will throw at them. They are seasoned seniors, they wont let some of that pressure get to them. CLEARFIELD go with a small backcourt with senior Darren Parry and junior Mark Reid, both are around the 59 mark, but both are very quick and the pesky type lljym uimI, Ule wmem US &ms loss at the top of the league. By DAVE VUGHAM Maybe its only fitting that the Viewmont and Bountiful contest should be played on Friday the 13th. Down the years these two clubs have staged some exciting classic matchups and this year promises to be just as good as any. LAST YEAR was a typical example of how things have gone between these two schools. The Vikes won both contests, the first in overtime and the second one in double overtime. To say these two clubs play close exciting basketball would be like saying Orem doesnt like movies with sex in them. To add to the drama consider that these two clubs played last year in the junior varsity ranks and split. Both won on the road. Hess didnt play for the Vikes in those two but then neither did Williams or Pendleton for the Braves. VIEWMONT is starting player who is all over the court on the press. This game will brtng together five of the top scorers in the league with Layton bringing Rory Dixon and Ben Bubak while the Falcons have Scott Wallace, Russell Florence and Brian Juhnson. Dixon is averaging 19 points an outing, third best in the league, with Bubak averaging 15 The Clearlieid bunch has Wallace at the 1: point matk with Russell and Johnson at the 14 point matk each outing of to wonder what they have to do to win in the region. They have lost their last two games by single points and have led the entire games in both of them. Those two losses came at the hands of Clearfield and Roy who are tied without a front with Rory Lhxun jb braridon Flint '' Vs ust 1 hr ft gn p ci i f ft l idiltT Iftau it r fiuftj pics i v d Tft b outirt r l1 hvnL "t S Kt Pdf L - . " Bountiful hasnt been that much more successful as they have dropped a one pointer to Weber, who is tied with the other two without a loss, and a five point decision to Sky View. Keep in mind the clubs had games on Tuesday. Bountiful is starting to get more balanced scoring from everyone to take the load off of the shoulders of their big man Irvy Williams. Irv will be the key in this matchup, if he can stay in the game then the Vikes will have a fight on their hands but if he gets in early foul trouble and has to sit out a lot of the game then the Vikes will have the upper hand. THE TASK of guarding Irvy, or at least trying to guard him, will probably fall on the shoulders of Cory Hanks. The Vikes tried everything and everyone last week in defending the big man Sholtec from Roy, and this week probably the same will hold true with Williams. Although not as big as Sholtec, Williams is every bit as good and agile. The forward spots will pit Bountifuls Scott Pendleton and Scott Crowther against Vikings Kevin Hess and Cal Curtis. This gives the Vikes a good height advantage which will give the Braves problems on the boards. ON THE guardline it will be Vikings Tod Jones and John Higley against Braves Chris Davies and Lynn Muir. This gives the Braves a height ad- vantage and the Brave guards have been scoring a lot more than their Vike counterparts. Muir has come on strong to take over a scoring role, he got 17 last week at Bonneville and should be a marked man. As it looks right now the forward advantage goes to the Vikings with the Bountiful factor on the center spot. Williams has been getting the ink but Hanks is no slouch. Key here will be the foul situation. Bountiful needs Irvy m the game, without him they Viewhave problems. mont would like Hanks in the game, without him they can go to Mike Yates. IF THE past is any indication this game could go past midnight. Both clubs need the win to stay alive in the region race. Who do we pick? From then on the Clearfield team never looked back. fi ' ' n W AS ALWAYS they got balanced scoring from their big people with Russell Florence leading the way with 13 and Brian Johnson and Scott Wallace both adding 12. Robbie Olsen led all scorers with a 15 point effort in a losing cause. For the second week in a row the Viewmont Vikings lost the game when their last second shot hit the rim and rolled off.
