THE AIRMAN, who is remaining at Lackland for specialized training in the security police field, studied the Air Force mission, organization and customs and received special instruction in human relations. Completion of this training earned the individual credits towards an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Pyles is a 1977 graduate of Layton High School . ACCORDING to Band Director Dana Rothlisberger and Davis District Coordinator of Music, Wayne James, the school has received few complaints from nearby residents. They seem to appreciate the kids getting up so early in the morning to practice, Mr. Rothlisberger said. Mr. James said apparently the community appreciates the esprite de corps that has won Davis High the first place trophy for large schools in the Davis Cup Invitational Marching Competition for the last two years. THE competition, sponsored by the Davis School District, and held at Rice Stadium at the University ol Utah, is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 8 p.m. The invitational marching show and band review, under the direction of Mr. James, has been an annual event for the last five years. This year six large bands and three small bands will be entered in the competition. BUT DAVIS High is deter- mined to win again, Mr. Rothlisberger said. Almost all of the 90 students, which includes flag twirlers and flag bearers, arrive at school at 5:30 a.m. to begin playing warmups, prior to walking to the driving range where they practice marching until 8 p.m. These early morning practice sessions have been going on ever since school began in the fall. Occasionally one student, arriving late, runs in to take his place in the formation. Mr. Rothlisberger said few students are late to practice. If they are late, they have the opportunity of running a lap, he said cheerfully. MR. Rothlisberger can be heard above the strains of Star Wars, talking through his transistor megaphone. Everyone is looking like litYou should know where you belong in the formation by now. He then assigns each of the nine sections to walk through their tle lost sheep. maneuver together. By this time, the sky has lightened, the breeze is not quite so brisk and the students begin to throw off their coats and parkas. But many still wear gloves to play, as the touch of the instruments is cold. The band marches through and then run back into WE LIKE to keep unity and variety, Mr. Rothlisberger said. The two college bands, Utah State University, under the direction of Dean Madsen, and University of Utah Band, under the direction of Gregg Hanson, will also perform at selves. In addition to winning first in the Davis Cup competition last year, the band placed third at the University of Utah Invitational and won the sweepstakes trophy at the Mt. Hood Orchestra Festival in Portland last year. The Davis High band was also one of two honor bands selected to play at the Rocky Mountain Music Festival in Tempe, Ariz. COMPETITION between the bands entering the Davis Cup competition will be based on nine areas of expertise, with 70 points of a possible 200 being awarded for the sound. , Other categories of judging include: inspection, percussive effects, maneuvers, showmanship, originality, precision, posture and bearing, and alignment. James Keene, professor of music at East Texas State University has been chosen as the guest the festival. OTHER BANDS who will enter Davis Cup competition are Bountiful, Viewmont, Brighton, Jordan District; and Granger and Olympus, Granite District. Four smaller bands Morgan, Tintic, Hurricane and Delta will compete in the small school competition. Alvin Nance Seeks Syracuse Council Mr. Nance has been a of Syracuse since 1947.
