Show WEEKLY REFLEX-DAV- NEWS JOURNAL, OCTOBER 13, 1977 IS Woods X Still Seek Its First Victory Dave Gets Darts From Dart Fans IPiredlocSioinis (Sain Jwsl (So Wrong By DAVE W IGHAM By DAVE WIGHAM This weeks contest with the Warriors of Weber going to battle the Layton squad could prove very interesting. Both clubs are coming off one point ballgames in which both of them came up on the short end of the score. LAYTON first game last of 6--0, 14-1- 22-1- 19-- ' REALISTICALLY everyone has a shot at the fourth spot with the exception of Sky View who is winless in region warfare. The Bountiful, Layton and Roy clubs appear to be on their way to the first three spots. But that all important fourth spot is up for grabs. Currently the Vikings and Falcons are tied with marks, with Bonneville and Weber right behind with 3 marks. Weber has probably the worse schedule left of all of the teams with Layton and Bountiful still on the schedule. That leaves Clearfield, Viewmont and Bonneville left to fight it out. THE BEST part of this is that the three of them get to play each other, so that means they can win or lose it on their own. Bonneville is playing Roy this week and if the experts are right the Royals should win, that means the winner of the Clearfield and Viewmont game would be one game ahead of the other two. The Lakers are capable 2 of winning though. The more you stop and try to analyze the situation, the more you realize that anything can and probably will happen. Somewhere, somehow, someone who isnt supposed to win, will. Sherrie Davis Wins Calif. Tennis Tourney Mrs. Sherrie Davis, Newport Beach, California has won the tennis championship title for 1977, of Newport Beach, it was learned this week by her parents, I.W. (Dick) and Eva R. Adams of Kaysville. Mrs. Davis is a former Layton resident. " was the former Sherrie Adams, a graduate of Davis High School, she attended one year at Utah State University, also attended Brigham Young University and graduated from Weber State College in 1963, with her B.S. degree in education. She taught at Kaysville Lincoln Junior High, Elementary and Crestview MRS. . r- - - i k DAVIS Elementary prior to moving to California to make her home. BESIDES being an excellent star in tennis, she is a busy housewife, mother, school teacher and involved in her church activities. She has played tennis off and on over the years, but only became serious over the sport the past the year to Roy while the week Weber people also lost 3 to the Clearfield bunch. Usually a loss means that the team comes out the next MR. AND Mrs. Davis have two daughters, April Dawn and Pollyanna and they have resided in California the past five years, np both clubs were on the losing end last week both contest. THE Layton crew has been consistent all year in winning the majority of their games, while the Weber team has been somewhat of an up and down club. In their first TRUE the Bobcats have yet to win in Region One, and true the Braves should win, but the Bobcats have been no easy target for anyone. Two weeks ago the Sky View club lost to Viewmont then last week they dropped a game to the Bonneville unit. When you consider that Bountiful only beat Bonneville and View0 mont you can realize how tough the Bobcats can beat. 8-- 0 ONE thing the Weber team is becoming known for is their last minute heroics, against Bonneville they scored in the final seconds with a long pass to win, and then last week they scored with no time showing on the clock but failed on the two point conversion. So never count the should you Warriors out until the final 6--0 BOUNTIFUL got a scare from cross-towrival Viewmont last week, many fans in attendance felt that the Vikes should have won, but the Braves came back strong in the second half to claim the win and first place in the region race. Next week the Braves have to travel to Lay-to- n to play, make that battle, the Lancers. n gun. One of the main differences in these two clubs is the running game. The Lancers have Maurice Turner and Todd Stapley to carry the ball, these two give the Layton squad a very potent running Bountiful WEBER on the other hand is a passing team, Warrior fans feel they have the best passer in Region One in Steve Trawick. Many fans will argue that point but Trawick has been very effective in throwing the ball. His favorite receivers are Dale Stone and Mark Montgomery. Mark is 4 but has good deceptive speed. Ben Bubak has shown that he can throw the ball with the bread and butter of the Bountiful squad has been their offensive line. These players, sometimes referred to as Rudds Renegades, have made running for Kyle McKay and Bill Wemli easy at times. On the sad side of things for Viewmont faithfuls the Vikes have lost Shane Smoot for the rest of the year as he was injured in the game last week. Against the Braves, Smoot was all over the field, he intercepted a couple of passes and stuffed some running attacks. The coaches indicated that at halftime Shane had already accumulated 17 defensive points. FEW weeks ago the Vikes lost one of their top offensive men in Tod Jones, so with the loss of Smoot the Vikes have lost two of their best players. Against Bountiful, quarterA back Kevin Hess had great success throwing the ball especially to his tight end Rick quarterback Brian Johnson leading the club with running backs Jim Wilson and Jim Arrant ready to carry the ball. Rodger Vincent has had some great plays in intercepting the ball and returning them for scores, he has excellent awareness and speed to cover his ground. a Clearfield win. The Vikes are moving the ball. Bountiful can stay on top of Region One with a win, and to do that the Braves will have to take the Bobcats seriously. If the Bountiful players look to next week and the Layton Club then Sky View can present problems, if the Braves take it one game at a time the Bobcats will be in for a long day. Everyone has called me to inform me that I must be blind, or that I have never seen a Davis High football game. Believe me. Ive seen a lot of Dart ball games, and the last time I had my eyes checked they were still pretty good. Although they have yet to win a game the Wildcats have been in almost every region contest till the end and probably could and should have won a couple of them. The Darts dont throw much, but are highly successful when they throw the football. The coaches around the league and the area like the new nickname given to the Davis offense, they realized that it was just a phrase. loss. One of the main assets the Darts have had throughout the year in the region is that many of their opponents havent seen or played against their offense, but the Cats have played against the Kaysville Wishbone and know what it's all about. But knowing what the Darts do and stopping them from doing it are two different things. THANKS FOR writing and calling but I know the Davis people run, and very well at that, the double wing. But to this reporter, the Davis offense will always be known as the Kaysville Wishbone. Davis Commission COACH WALLY Hawkins has done a great job with his young club, and watch out for them next year, and he will probably find a way to play the Darts tough. When the commission learned that the bids on the ambulances were about $3,000 less than had been budgeted and almost $6,000 less than Dr. Johns had estimated they might cost, they authorized Dr. Johns to call for bids for the two radios. THE VOTE of approval will allow the health department to buy the two radios for $3,564 from Motorola Corp., the company that submitted the low bid. Only one other company, Prescon, submitted a bid, which was about $800 higher than the low bid. Dr. Johns recommended that the JEANNE Layton, Davis County librarian, said the county will pay 52 percent of the cost of the bookmobiles or $39,300 during the 1977 budget year. This cost is up from $37,889, the cost last year. Russell Davis, director of the State Library Commission, said the state pays 30 percent of the cost of operating the bookmobiles, with the federal government subsidizing the bookmobiles for 20 percent of the cost. MISS LAYTON said that while the bookmobiles operate under the direction of the state, the Davis County Library Board governs where the bookmobile stops. To add to the suspense both clubs are coming off heart stoppers from last week. The Falcons almost lost to Weber with no time showing on the clock but rose to the occasion and stopped the two point conversion. Viewmont on the other hand saw a 10-halftime lead dwindle to the ; THESE players all go over on defense, one which has been one of the best in the league this year, where they are joined by linebackers in Larry Hale, Kent Palmer, and Dave Wright along with John Hazen. with Sky View lightly. n :: Smith and tight end Steve Toolson, have all played and blocked well. worst thing the Bountiful football team could do would be to take this week's game league battle the Warriors were beaten by Viewmont, a team the Lancers dominated. ROY AND Layton are currently tied for second place in the region race with a single loss each. The Royals lost to Bountiful while the Lancers lost to the Royals. Roy has a tough game coming up with rival Bonneville, a club which gave both Bountiful and Layton problems. Layton on the other hand has to play the Brave squad.
