FIRST OF all, if they want to make money at the state Recreation Games Davis County much expanded Recreation Basketball league got off to a booming start on Monday, Nov. 22. AT BOUNTIFUL High School defending champion Darrels Chevron fell to a high scoring Bountiful team. The winners were led by former Weber State star Jimmy Watts who led all scorers with 38 points he received lots of help from Bob Roots who scored 28 points. Dennis Green and John Allen led Darrels with 28 and 22 points respectively but could never overcome and early lead by the Bountiful team. Viewmont High School. On November 29, 1976, Farmers Insurance takes on Darrels Chevron when these two have met in the past it has always been an action packed game they play at 7 at Bountiful High followed by Hoskings Helicopters against Centerville at 8:15 p.m. at Hill Air Force Gym pits E&M THE LONE game Ford against Bountiful in a 9:15 game. There will be no games at Viewmont High on the 29th due to a scheduling problem but action returns on December 6, 1976, with games at 7:15, 8:30 and 9:45 p.m. tournament games, whether it be football, basketball or whatever, why do they schedule their games in the morning and afternoon when most people are at work? With all due respect to Davis and Dixie why didnt they schedule the 4A championship on Saturday. Consider this reasoning, the way the schools are categorized is by size and number, the 4A schools are larger than the 3A. IF THE school is bigger, that means there are more people in the community. The 4A title game was between Provo and Skyline; you cant Mond E tell me there arent more people combined in Salt Lake City (Skyline) and Provo than there are in Kaysville and Cedar City. Its not to say that the 4A game was better, but if its money theyre after, why didnt they schedule the bigger gate for the Saturday game when more people would have been off work. THEN IN the quarterfinal games why do they schedule them at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.? For the average fan to attend he would have to take off half the morning and half the afternoon from work. Why not just schedule the games at 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m ? At least then the worker would only have to get the afternoon off. Basketball is a different story, at least in the state tournament they start all the games in the afternoon. No morning games here. A COUPLE of years ago the association tried the mythical Farmers Insurance ran from away Hoskings Helicopters 97 to 67. Randy Johnson led Farmers scoring witli 28, the Cleverly brothers Alan and Gary added 23 and ( 19 in the lopsided win. DOUG Ohlson hit for 27 and 17 in trying to Jay Clark for keep the Hoskings Helicopter team in the game. At Hill Air Force Base Gym ' the base team downed E&M Ken Jones and Ford Tim Chapman led the Hill team with 20 & 19 points. RANDY Moss had 16 for Wm Green Ltd. In a close fought game Quality Paving outlasted Val Verda 69-5- the Quality Paving team in scoring was Goff with 22. Jay Clarkson had 14 for Leading Val Verda. Wasatch Sporting Goods ran away from Farmington High scorer was Punchy Lee with 17, Redford added 15. Ellis had 16Toomer had 14 for the Farmington team. 72-5- i FOR SOME exciting basketball action, plan on attending Mondays at Bountiful High, Hill Air Force Base or hate to pick on the Utah High School Activities Association, but some of the policies and ideas they come up with just amaze me at times. Davis had three days to practice for their first game with Viewmont; maybe the Vikes would have still beaten them by the same margin had they had longer to prepare, but who knows? Coaches might complain that if everything is moved back those two weeks, that would cut down on the number of games they could schedule, but I disagree. They would have to play two games a week but thats what the colleges do anyway. IT JUST seems that if this governing organization wanted all things even, they would HE WAS previously employed by Clearfield for two years and by Syracuse for three years as a police officer. The new chief served in the USAF for four years including one tour in Vietnam. ANSWERS TO SPORTS QUIZ rs IF THE UHSAA wants these programs to work hand in hand and to give everyone an equal chance in basketball, why dont they either move up the football back of police. Dave F.
