Many of our sportsmen have realized the value of a dependable retriever. We generally include any of a half dozen breeds in the term These include the Chesapeake Bay, Labrador, Goldens, Irish and Ameriretriever. can water spaniels. Whil? the Labradors are more generally popular than the Chesapeake Bay, the latter is without peer when hunting in extreme cold and shooting over choppy water when extieme strength and endurance is needed. There are exceptions, I believe, when trainers repeatedly refer to the Chesapeake as being hard to train and control. Many Labs and Goldens are proving to be extremely rugged hunters while being much easier to train. Many people belive that both the Chesapeakes and Labradors lesult from the Newfoundland dog dating back to ly07 in Maryland. Its not certain, but many predate this ance-tr- y to Lnglish background. Right now the Labradors popularity is at an all time high. Retriever trials and dog loveis in general are realizing his intelligence in field trail woik. The Golden Labs was reputedly discovered in a arcus and its ancestry is strictly a matter of guess. They have been traced to Russia and their use as sheep dog. Placing themselves as the least most popular of the retrievers, both the Irish and the American water spaniels have now caught on in the U. S. as have other bieeds. Their ancestry dates back to ancient times. These dogs vary as to size and their coats, whether curly coated or flat coated. The Irish is bigger than the American spaniel. These dogs appear to be infused with poodle and setter strains. This would account for the i r appearance and interest in upland game. Training and breeding of these dogs can and usually does get quite involved and expensive. Prices for retrievers vary with breeding and training from practically nothing to upwards of $3,000. Any way you look at it, fellas, theyll bring em back dead or alive but its up to you to bring em down.
