X V TfOttl - UTAH t few articles wills be dedicated to brief explanations and descriptions of our upland game birds, both native and axotie : spech?3, ; Fast rising in popularity in Utah and Davis County is the Chukar Partridge. This exotic specie was first introduced in any great numbers into Davis County in 18.18. Utiliiing habitat that basically is of little value except as a home for the Chukar and our deer population, their numbers are increasing rapidly. The Chukar Partridge is one of 2D of Bock Partridge,1 native to Southern Asia-.- - Its name Chukar" is derived from its influence in India. The Chukar is a plump, chicken like bird, somewhat larger than the Hungarian Partridge, 13 to 10 inches long. The males weigh from 21 to 20 ounces while the females weigh from 10 to 19 ounces on the average. The coloration of the birds is identical in both the male and females of the species. The male may be distinguished from the female during the breeding season by its larger size and by the presence of spurs. When present the females spur is smaller and more pointed than that of the male. By observing the birds closely it will be noted that the males cheekfeathers will be more filled out than that of the female. Sexing of these birds is always difficult when based on external characteristics only. The first Chuckars brought to the United States, as far as the records show, were liberated in Illinois in 1893; these birds came from the vicinity of Karachi, India. This first plant didnt flourish, due to the radical change in environment and habitat. It has been found now that this bird will thrive best west of the Plains States generally. Our semi-ari- d dry climate of Utah is proving to be beneficial to the Chukar, Chukars when hunted generally prefer running as a means of escape, unless they are approached from higher ground, then they tend to flush in covey flight when disturbed. The hunter that gets a shot at a covey when they" are on the wing finds a Sporty target. Dogs prove to be of great value in finding dead or wounded birds. The Chukar habit of dispersing widely over the mountainsides after first flushing definitely hampers the actions of most hunting dogs. From all indication, it appears the Chukar has a promising future here in Utah and Davis County. As their numbers increase their popularity as a sport will also increase and should help to relieve hunting pressure on other game in the vicinity.
