We like to have fun together, says Dyches. It e intershows. But pretive dance is not the only way they enjoy themselves; the winning is nice too. On MT. PLEASAN- T- We have so many aphorisms. Wit, wisdom and time have collaborated to concoct such sayings as: you cant have your cake and eat it too, and, you shouldnt mix business with pleasure. But please, dont tell that to the seniors of the North Sanpete (NS) volleyball team, they wont believe you. They know better. With all of the challenges and demands on these girls to succeed in so many areas, they have found the sweet taste of success through sweat and sacrifice, while still managing to have some fun along the way. Seniors Jessica Aagard, Holly Christensen, Kelly Chlarson, and Melanie believe in working hard. Nearly everyday they spend two to three hours in practice. Chlarson notes, 5Its intense. . . Coach doesnt let us waste time. While their devotion to volleyball is impressive, it is only one facet of their fascinating lives. They are involved in everything. They are student body officers, have lead roles in the musicals, participate in choirs, business and other clubs and competitions, play several other sports, while taking many college classes. What may be most impressive is that they do all of this and still maintain GPAs above 3.9. Every one of them. So, with everything else going on, what keeps them motivated to play? According to Aagard, its knowing how good it feels to win. We have high expectations tor ourselves; we expect more of ourselves, Dy-ch- pre-gam- first in region the court we add to each other, we complement each other, Christensen added. After all, theyve been together for a long time, and as Chlarson noted, Were all good friends. That friendship has made them stronger ana will hopefully help celebrate even more wins. As fate would have it, they bus ride shared a five-howith those same Dinos to a summer volleyball tournament. The course played so tough that coaches asked to play put away 10, 8, and 6 kills, respectively. The other teams were also up to the challenge. The JV was victorious in rive games, the sophomores succeeded in four, and the freshmen felled Canyon View Jr. High in five games. The cold, windy conditions were compounded by hard greens and tough pin placements, which resulted in scores that must have shocked some players. Only three rounds under 80 were turned in by a field that featured some excellent prep golf talent. Manti's Matt Lyons finished in the top 20 individually, shooting 5 for a total of 177. His first day total left him only four shots out of the lead, but like so many others, he couldn't hold that pace on the second day. Manti's other competitors had an even tougher time with the 82-9- conditions. Beaver's Trevor Hunt won medalist honors when he defeated Richfield's Kyle Chappell and Juan Diego's Mike Uhle on the first hole of a sudden deathplayoffT total of 161, which Those three finished with a two-da- y doesn't sound good, but proved to be enough at this tough tournament test. Beaver finished four strokes behind Richfield to take second, while Juan Diego finished in third place, six strokes behind the winners. It's Richfield's second straight state golf championship and 14th overall. Competing for Manti during the season were Matt Lyons, Jordan Van Orman, Jake Jacobsoen, Tim Kjar, Blake Wheeler, Helen Steck, D.J. Ransom, Justin Crosland, and Robbie Layton. Mark Hailing was Manti's top finisher individually in 40th place, followed by Michael Eastman ' in 41st.
