Show THE 2 PYRAMID Thursday, October 14, 2004 INSIDE By Merrill Ogden SANPETE Jake Garn supports Being a Donor Initiative 1 This Saturday the Snow College Badger football team will be christening a new state of the art turf at the stadium in Ephraim. Dixie State will be visiting for another episode m the long standing rivalry. The turf is a terrific Improvement for the football field. The new playing field is a gift to the college from an anonymous donor. If I remember right, approximately a half million dollars was given with the specific request that the funds be earmarked for the football stadium playing surface. Somebody out there likes Badger footbalL And thats a good thing. Not all of us have $500K sitting around in an account just waiting for us to decide where to donate it. But when its all piled up in one place, it really stinks.) Thinking about this anonymous donor who so freely gave, caused me to do a little pondering. First of all, I I I Eondered from the viewpoint of envy. (Dang, wish of dough!) Secondarily, I wondered what I would donate to if I had a half million dollars to give. It became quite a challenge as I considered the hypothetical donation. Have you ever considered such a thing? What if you had significant amounts of money to donate. Where would you do your giving? There are lots of places right here in Sanpete that could use a financial boost. The Merrill Ogden Posterity Scholarship Fund is the first one that comes to mind. Feel free to donate in any amount. The Merrill Ogden World Exploration Travel Fund is another organization which could use some jingle. If those possibilities dont turn you on, I know there are others. Donations to educational institutions are always popular. All of Sanpetes schools, including Wasatch Academy and Snow College, have ongoing wish lists for their needs. Sanpetes cities and towns have similar lists. A committee in Manti, for example, has been doing fundraisers for a new swimming pool for years now. A half million bucks could really make a difference for that kind of a project. Parks always need upgrading. New parks need to be for Utah runs deep. But these days, from the air, I can also see how fast Utah is changing, and I can see the congestion and pollution that threaten our quality of life. How will we make room for 1 million more people by 2020? The question isnt if were going to grow, its how. Now is the time to plan wisely for growth and protect what makes Utah special. This is why I support Initiative 1. Initiative 1 will raise $150 million in conservation bonds to protect our sources of drinking water, wildlife, farm and ranch-landparks and trails, open space and cultural and historic landmarks, all for only $14 per-yefor the average Utah family. It be done. It takes a lot of money for all these kinds of much to our quality of life today. And its not just our quality of life thats at stake; its our economy. Another specific Sanpete effort that could use some support is local artist Kaziah Hancocks project. Many of you may be aware of her commitment to have oil portraits painted and framed of each soldier who is lost m the Iraq war at no charge to the families. She has been written up a few times in the media, most recently in the Salt Lake Tribune last week. When Kaziah first determined that she, would paint all of the fallen soldiers, there were less than 1C(0, and , the war seemed to be nearly finished. Now there are more than 1,000 dead and the end of fatalities is not yet ' insight. What originally was a tremendous project has become a super duper, tremendous, gargantuan project. Yet Kazian is determined to not turn back from her goal. But shes unable to do it by herself. Shes enlisting the help of other artists and is hoping that some people will be inclined to contribute to the cause to offset the costs involved. I am personally acquainted with Kaziah. Shes a feisty character and is resolute that this project be completed. (Contributions can be made at any Wells Fargo Bank - Project Compassion. Information about the artist and the project is available online at www.kaziahthegoatwoman.com or , by calling So, the thought occurs to me, even if I dont have $500,000, 1 do have something, I have $10. Why dont I give $10 to a worthy cause I normally dont give to? Just think, if each Sanpete resident were to become a donor and give $10 to a cause, there would be more than $200,000 given to projects and causes in the county, It aint a half a million, but its something. Think about it.
