Show THE 2 INSIDE By PYRAMID Thursday, October 7, 2004 Merrill Ogden SANPETE To Protect and Serve Over the weekend, I saw the movie Ladder 49. It depicts the life of a fireman in Baltimore starting with him as a rookie in the firehouse. Good times and bad times, both professionally and personally, are shown. The emphasis underlying the story is the deeply rooted firefighter philosophy oPwe help people. Most or the reviews Ive seen on the film have been positive, I thought it was well done and I liked it. Joaquin Phoenix, John Travolta and Jacinda Barrett put in nice performances. The show motivated me to do some thinking about how some jobs in our society are demanding and dangerous, Firefighters, police officers and others in that realm put their lives on the line for the service and protection of the rest of us. I suspect that they often provide their service with little thanks. .In that same vein, the day after seeing the movie, something else added to my thoughts on this subject. A was directing traffic as we crossed South ?olice officer Street Sunday afternoon in Salt Lake City. There were zillions of people and it was a super busy LDS Conference weekend. As we walked past the officer, my daughter said, Thank you officer, and he acknowledged her comment. Then Sally said, I dont think they get thanked often enough when they do stuff like this. It was a good point and I felt a little ashamed that I probably dont snow enough gratitude to those who do what are sometimes difficult jobs for society. Were fortunate to have people who have the disposition and heart to do those jobs. Think of those workers who have been going through the land-fi- ll in Salt Lake City, by hand, looking for the remains of Lori Hacking. What a iob that had to be. To have her body finally round is a blessing for her family. After so mucn work in the search, the workers involved must feel a sense of relief. I hope that they feel thanked for what theyve done there as well. Perhaps, since Im feeling this way, I should write a note of thanks to someone representing those workers. I know people who write lots of thank you notes. I should write more. There are people in Sanpete who protect and serve us. Our law enforcement, search ana rescue people, fire fighters and others are out there for us all the time. They shoulder the responsibilities when emergencies require that SOMEONE do the dirty work. L for one, take them for granted too often. As I think about it though, sometimes I do the dirty work by writing this column. Sometimes I put my life on the line. You dont believe me? Tiy writing something sometime in the paper that people don't agree with. Your life suddenly isnt worth much to some people. Okay, its not quite that bad. There may be a few people who want to kill me, but the rewardpunishment ratio hasnt yet reached the critical point for them. My wife is my main worry. Really though, most of us don't face high risk situations in our daily work. (Not counting driving among our fellow Sanpete drivers.) We do, however, all have difficult lives, to one degree or another. But, thats just life in Sanpete. For those who protect and serve us, its a different kind of difficult. Lets recognize that and give them the occasional thanks that they deserve...MerrilI Bring back the Sandy and Pete game Dear Editor: A letter to the editor published in The Pyramid Sept. 16th and signed by the North Sanpete High School cheer- leaders asks Manti High School to resume the basketball games between the two schools, or relinquish the "Sandy and Pete" dolls kept by the winning team. Their suggestion makes sense to me, but unfortunately it doesn't look like either of those things will happen. And the silence on this issue, from the good folks on both ends of the valley, has been deafening. Is it possible that no one cares? I hope not, because the Manti- - North Sanpete basketball games are high spirited and entertaining. At least they used to be. As near as I can tell, the current Manti High administration believes the rivalry needs a cooling off period due to last year's rugged contest, and some comments made afterward.
