"Ike" Lunt Seiver County man diagnosed with Hantavirus SEVIER COUNT- Y- A Sevier County man who was diagnosed as having been infected with the often deadly Hantavirus is expected to fully recover. The man was recently discharged from a local hospital where his symptoms were successfully treated. The diagnosis is the first in Utah in 2004. The infection, which took place in June, was recently confirmed by blood tests. At this point, it is uncertain where the man was infected but the exposure likely took place in a rodent infested shed. Hantavirus is present primarily in the droppings, saliva and urine of rodents, usually deer mice. Humans who breathe in the virus as a mist or dust may become infected and develop Pulmonary Syn- drome (HPS). The virus may also be transmitted to humans by touching the mouth or nose after handling contaminated materials. A rodents bite may also spread the virus. Health Department. People need to continue to use caution in areas where rodents may he present. Investigators from the Central Utah Public Health Department are initiating an epidemiological investigation to try to determine the source of the man's exposure and infection. To date there have been 26 HPS cases in Utah of which eight of those cases have been in Central Utah. Two of those eight cases in Central Utah have been fatalities. The Utah HPS fatality rate of 27 percemt is less than the current national fatality rate of 38 percent. According to Resendes, With about one third of all infected persons dying and most lic cases occurring in the western states and with no vaccine or cure yet available, we can't be too careful about HIS. Much of this years public health efforts will be on the West Nile Virus, preparation and perhaps SARS, but we must not forget about other local biological threats such as I lantavirus. When cleaning areas with a known to small number of rodents, persons should wear latex or rubber gloves and wet down affected areas with general household disinfectant solutions such as Lysol or bleach and water or ammonia. Cleaning of areas with large numbers of rodents should in- clude the wearing of latex or rubber gloves, goggles, a respirator fitted with HEPA filters as well as wetting the area with disinfectants to keep down the dust. Rodent prevention actions should also accompany this type ot cleaning to ensure no reoccurrence of an infestation. HPS symptoms usually appear within two weeks of infection but can appear as early as three days to as late as six weeks after infection. First symptoms are general and flulike fever of F.; headache; abdominal, joint and lower back pain; sometimes nausea and vomiting.
