Show THE 2 INSIDE By Merrill PYRAMID Thursday, July 15, 2004 Commentary Ogden SANPETE A broken promise Pain in the Bntt Dear Editor to shut up and not campaign any further for support of Senator Bennetts bill which would designate our Highway 89 corridor through central Utah as The National Pioneer Mormon Heritage I promised How often do you hear someone say, Thats a pain in the butt? (In some newspapers, you might see that part of anatomy termed differently. And I dont mean pain in the rear. But this column attempts to have at least a modicum of civility and restraint. Thats what Im all about civility and restraint. Yeah - right.) Sometimes we say that someone or something gives us a headache or heartburn "Pain in the neck is a common expression we use. But, more often than not, we hear the pain in the butt type comment. I hear people saying it about people all the time. Hes a real pain in the butt! theyll exclaim. To be gender fair and equal, shes are also pains in the butt. In fact...never mind. Im not sure where the expression started, but Ive found out this past week what it is to have a literal pain in the butt. Its annoying. Its constant. And it does hurt. So, Im assuming that constantly annoying, hurtful people are the proverbial "pains in the butt from whence the expression derives. Ive heard of tailbone injuries before. Most of the stories are talestails from women who have had difficult chDdbirths. I also know of an incident involving a tree stump and tubing down a snowy slope which resulted in lifelong tailbone repercussions. My injury last Monday was not the result of a difficult childbirth or tubing incident. Well, wait a second. It did involve an inner tube, (but not childbirth). My injury resulted in a difficult passage over a canal waterfall without the benefit of an inner tube. In keeping with tradition, a group of my family floated the canal west of Richfield as part of our Independence Day celebration. There were 21 of us on the expedition - two from my generation and 19 from the next. (I continue to insist that I am just a kid.) As luck would have it, my inner tube and I parted company just above the small waterfall above Jeps Hole in the canal. It was exhilarating to fly over the little drop off into the spillway below. However, it was a sudden shock to hit bottom (literally -with my bottom) and be swept by the torrent down the canal where I hooked up with an air mattress in the whirlpool effect of the old. The pain wasnt that bad that day. But it seems to have gotten worse as the days have worn on. Maybe thats another characteristic of people who are pains in the butt. They get worse as time wears on. As I rub my posterior, discreetly; I wonder who considers me a pain in the butt. My family? My My neighbors? Motorists on the highway? I also pause to think of who are pains in the butt" for me. My neighbors? Motorists on the My family? My highway? My colonoscopy doctor? I try not to consider people as pains. I try to understand that everyone is a person with problems and painful situations that theyre dealing with everyday. I try to remember that there are others who have hit bottom and are feeling the effects. By the same token, I try not to be a pain in the butt to others. I dont always succeed. I tell myself that trying is the key in all of this. People will often be tolerant if they sense that genuine efforts are being made to mitigate the pain in the butt syndrome. Well, theres more to be said on this subject; but I believe that Ive come to an end. Hopefully, you will all be able to keep our rears up and away from the rocks. That advice comes too late for me. Hopefully my ache will subside so I can concentrate more on the metaphorical pains in my butt rather than the literal one. Merrill Area. But, the article titled Heritage in a recent article written by Kent Appleberry of Sanpete County infuriated me to the point that I must once again express my opinions. It is ironic that Kent would single out both Orem and Moab as prime examples of communities that were ruined by progress. It is true that both have been affected by progress and in progress there are some losses. Gone is the little basement homes that had been abandoned for years, that I rented for $12 per month, replaced all the broken windows and doors and moved my young family into when I returned from WWII. It was all that was available at that time. On this land now d stands a beautiful stake center, servicing hun- they believed in. Today, we are having difficulty securing commitment to a war for our very survival! America is losing its commitment to families, to freedom, to devotion. Perhaps we need a few reminders of those values that made us such a strong and cherished nation. If the few who vigorously fight this designation think that the communities along Highway 89 will lose their agricultural characteristic simply because more come to learn and experience our unique cultures and histories, stay in our motels and have their meals in our restaurants, they are sadly misin- formed. Lets hope the loud cries from these dissenting few are not heard in Washington. Enough said. Bud Barnes, Kanab Help children retain academic skills academic skills. Most students experience some regression over a long vacation, such as a summer vacation or other extended break. Standardized tests show that students in general education and with moderate disabilities regress by approximately four percent, or about one month, according to research by Tilley, Cox and Staybrook. Here, we can learn of a complete civilization that disappeared nearly 1,500 years ago in this very canyon when the highway was being built. In this museum, you can look with a young woman and see her just as she looked like back then. It is a shame that these great learning facilities are most often unknown and simply bypassed. Who would not want to share their heritage? Of course, as we publicize, more will come to experience and learn, especially those along the Wasatch Front, who need to teach their heritage to their own kids.
