Heck, fts a big deal for anywhere. I mean - where else can you see 14,000 fading chairs sitting in one place on a lawn. Thats quite a ; v- right in and of itself. I missed the first 17 seasons erf the Mormon Miracle Pageant. Well, 1 didnt really miss them all 1 was a spectator three or four times during that era. However, this 3Sth seasoned the outdoor extravaganza will be my 20th consecutive season as v J; someone involved in the production. vv ; , . This isnt anything extra fecial cither than tonrysdf, There are many, many others who have been much more heavily involved for many more years. I am resisting the temptation to ' name names. There are too many. U v This year you can see me as George Washington m the show. George comes out during what is called the patriotic scene. This is where Brigham Young is crossing the plains with the pioneers and is depicted as being reminded by figures : from the past of our duty to serve our country. I have three sentences that I have to lip sync with the soundtrack. 1 also give large hand gestures designed to be seen by the people in the street a block away, then I kneel in my ver-: mono! a classic George Washington pose. In case you dont make it to the pageant this year, Im going to see to it that you hear my part. (Im sure you're thrilled.) ! ' Here are my three sentences: ; The voice of my country I can never hear but with venera-tlo- n and love. Every step by which the people of them United States have advanced seems to have been distinguished by some token of providential agency. The propitious smiles of : heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the : eternal rules of order and right, which heaven itself has Dear Editor: Did you know ; that one of the most important elections in the history of Sanpete County will occur next week? On June 22, the voters of Sanpete County and five other rural counties will decide if Sanpete County resident Leonard Blackham serves s ! another four years as our state senator. You may be asking, then, what makes this election important? Senator Blackham, a former Sanpete County Commissioner, has served 12 years in the state senate. With 10 of those years in im- portant leadership roles, Senator Blackham is easily one of the most powerful and knowledgeable senators on the hill. No one understands the issues facing rural Utah and no one is , by Benton Peterson THr PYRAMID deed, I would argue that Senator Blackham has brought more benefits and recognition to Sanpete County and rural Utah than any other politician in our history. Perhaps more important, s however, are Senator personal traits. 1 have known Leonard all my life. Leonard Blackham is a man full of integrity and devotion. A more dedicated, hardworking, public servant I have yet to find. Characteristics like these are rare in politicians today and Black-ham- must be cherished. Clearly, we would be foolish to lose a public servant with the characteristics and leadership abilities of Senator Blackham. I am asking you to get out and vote on June 22 and vote for Leonard Blackham. It will make a difference. Eddie L. Cox, Fairview more capable of solving those issues than Senator Blackham. No children came after the marriage. ;r Ironically, the father of our country never had a child of Dear Editor: As a state delegate, I told my precinct that in evaluating office seekers I would look past the "Hes a nice guy," "I like him," "Hes OK" type of comments, past the popular issues like Right To Life, Second Amendment, and more, to things like voting records on taxes and spending, liberty and freedom, and the Constitution. Congressman Cannon took an oath to support the republican principles upon which this nation was founded. With his votes for free(?) trade, with thousands of pages of regulations given by a globalist organization, and amnesty for illegal immigration. It is clear that Congressman Cannon refuses to be guided by the Constitution and he is undermining the security and sovereignty of this nation. In an email the other day, Cannon said, "that the decision about educating our children should be made by parents, local school boards and educa-tors-nbureaucrats in Washington D.C." He then proceeded at length to try and justify why he voted for No Child Left Behind ; , his own. Id like to share one more Washington tidbit with you. The following is an order given in August of 1775 wherein General Washington speaks of himself in the third person. The General does not mean to discourage the practice of bathing whilst the weather is warm enough to continue it, but he expressly forbids any persons doing it near the bridge in Cambridge, where it has been observed and complained of that many men, lost to all sense of decency and common modesty, ' Hare running naked upon the bridge, whilst passengers and ; even ladies of the first fashion in the neighborhood, are passing . over it, as if they meant to glory in their shame, That gives a little different view" on the American Revohi-- ! As a principled constitutionalist, he is very much opposed to the issues stated above. Under State Senator Black-ham- s "proven leadership," and as the Executive Appropriations Committee we have become one of the highest taxed states in the nation and our state budget has increased many times more than has our population. By law, the state budget has to be balanced, but then we do a lot of bonding and keep on spending. In the last 10 years, Utah has increased its debt to an e high of nearly $2 billion! Smart business owners identify waste and onerous regulatory acts and eliminate them. Shouldn't our government leaders do the same? It's time for a change. Senator Blackham has a lifetime score of 45 percent with the conservative Utah Grass Roots organization, and for 2003-04- , the Utah Taxpayers Association rates him at 48.5 percent. State Representative Darin Peterson, Blackham's opponent, has a 75 percent lifetime score from Utah Grassroots and merits an 86.8 percent rating from the Utah Taxpayers Assoc. I am supporting Darin Peterson as our next State Senator. Rodney E. Harris, Mt. Mayor Robertson countered that many of the properties which are in violation of the city ordinance are the same ones He also lamented that some of them have illegal connections and pumps which remove water from the system thereby starving their neighborhood and they have water Robertson also wanted any resident who has an acre of land but j only enough shares of water to effectively water a half acre to tell the city which half they were going to water. If residents do not comply with the present water ordinance, they should be capped or have the water shut off, he said. Since there had been some question about the amount of water that was to be allocated to North Sanpete School District, the city had not been billing them. Robertson told the city treasurer to bill the district $4,000. That was to be billed retroactively after this situation had been resolved, according to Councilmember Milton Larson. The council did not decide whether to issue a water violation warning before citing a violator or to cite them immediately when a city police officer notices the violation. Another water violation would be to water any property on Sunday, according to the mayor, who added that a police officer would be patrolling the community on that day. Public budget hearings Two public hearings have been held. The first was scheduled for 6:30 p.m., before the city council meeting to amend the 2003-0budget. The second hearing was scheduled for 6:45 p.m., concerning the proposed budget for 2(K)44)5. No one from the public appeared, so there were two periods of 15 minutes each where there was nothing but silence. At the end of that time, the council adopted the amended budget and the proposed budget for 2004-05- . for 2003-0The new budget contained a $500 increase for business licenses and permits; and a $4,000 increase in the police user fees. The council voted to increase the fees except for Councilman Greg Morley, who voted against. Another increase in the General Fund was about $8,000 in interest income from grant money received for the third phase of the citys irrigation project and various bank accounts, Mayor Robertson said. Moroni City plans to spend more for administrative costs, the police department, animal control and heritage development. Small reductions for the Justice Court, cemetery and zoning compliance expenses were also in the budget. July Fourth activities Greg Morley rejxirted on a long list of activities for the Fourth of July, which will be celebrated in Moroni on Saturday, July 3. These activities included adult soccer, talent show, youth dance, parade and carnival. Anyone interested in renting a booth of any kind, will pay a $35 fee. Morley also informed the council that the BBQ dinner will be held in the old park rather than on the hill in order to facilitate better access for seniors. I le also was able to get the mayor and some councilmen to agree to participate in the dunk tank. Lawn care Neither Greg Morley nor Paul Bailey were very happy with the work done by Goods Lawn Care in the cemetery and in one park. They just need to get it done. If there is a holiday, they need to work harder the other days. I dont think we are getting what we are paying for, Morley said, but continued with, I want them to do it because thats the cheapest thing for the city, No action was taken to change anything except to encourage Goods to do better. Other business I n other business, David Crosland informed the council that scooters can be ridden on any road posted with a speed limit. However, any speed posted over that would prohibit any scooter traffic," he commented. The council adopted a new city handbook, but it did not contain any statement about a police officer being required to live in Moroni. That requirement was added to the recently approved police user fee ordinance. City Administrator Barbara Gordon will hold off on paying three bills since according to Treasurer Stacy Gardner there is no money available. Finally, the council approved by consensus to pay for mosquito spraying and to allow State Senator Leonard Blackham to place large campaign signs at the ball park and mini-par-- 4 , ' Railroad on track to link center of Utah ht Mt Pleasant 1 As a retired educator I can tell you we should have nothing to do with NCLB! Robertson explained that such an action is a Class B misdemeanor and stated that Justice Court Judge Ivo Peterson told him that a fine would be levied on any violators. Councilman David Crosland wondered if that amount for a fine would be legal and Greg Morley suggested the city get a legal opinion on that. I Iowever, the council took no action to do so. Councilman Robert Morley said he would prefer a fine minimum of $25.
