Pleasant, passed away peacefully Jan. 31, 2004, surrounded by his loving family, in Salt Lake City after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He is survived by his wife, Naomi Ericksen Berti; children, Sharilyn (Kent) Bagley, Salt Lake City; Dick (Sharon) Berti, Salt Lake City; Antonette (John) Clapp, Las Vegas, NV; grandchildren, Maria, Erin, Nicolas Berti Pinegar, Las Vegas, NV; and brothers, Joseph and Angelo Berti, New York. A1 was born Feb. 21, 1922, in Wishaw, PA, to Enrico Berti and Josephine Messina. He served his country during WWII in the US Army. married A1 Naomi Ericksen, Aug. 10, 1945, and they moved to Niagara Falls, NY, where he worked in bridge and pier construction on the Niagara River. In 1950, they moved to Mt. Pleasant, where he became owner and operator of Ericksen Meat and Grocery. For many years it was a favorite gathering place for many Mt. Pleasant residents, who enjoyed the warm atmosphere, and Als sense of humor. He was later employed as a supervisor of the turkey processing plant in Moroni. A1 was a true example of a perfect gentleman. He was a loving caring husband and father, who will be dearly missed. The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Dr. LeGrand Belnap, the 4 West nursing staff at St. Marks Hospital; and the love and kindness shown by the staff at Care Source. Funeral services will be held in his honor on Saturday, Feb. 7, at 11 a.m., in the Mt. Pleasant Fourth LDS Ward, 55 Until recently, choosing a mobile phone was like buying bottled water: There was an abundance of brands and prices, but roughly the same thing inside. Not anymore. To better serve busy professionals and computer-savvy young adults, telephone makers have introduced an array of advanced phones that have transformed this water into wine cellar of a high-tec- h options. Phone buyers can get wireless internet and access, music and video storage and playback, downloadable applications and games. Oh, these aptly named smart phones can send and receive phone calls, too. With consumer demand growing, manufacturers will nearly double shipments of smart phones by 2008. This is nearly twice the anticipated growth rate of phones with built-i- n cameras, according to technol- ogy forecasters InStat MDR. cupboard, light maple, 2 doors, one shelf. 24 34 depth, 18" high, 21 34" width, 2 removable frame, $70; 18 solid brass vase, The Crash Outcome Date Evaluation System (CODES) at the University of Utah reports that medical costs average 55 percent more for those who arent wearing a seat belt in a crash. The Utah Highway Traffic Safety Association calculates the cost of crashes at almost $22,000 per crash and $110,000 per injury in di- rect and indirect costs. For both safety and cost reasons, most employers have adopted strict seat belt use policies for their employees at work. Off the job crashes also effect employers. Each year these crashes cost employers in the U.S. more than $14 billion in health care, sick leave, life and disability insurance as well as indirect costs to doing business. The proposed primary seat belt law cal also have a positive impact on Medicaid payments by decreasing the number of preventable injuries that seriously impact the states health care budget. State governments have seen Medicaid expenses continually increase as they mary states have usage rates that are significantly higher than the surrounding secondary law states. The U.S. Supreme Court addressed this argument in its 1972 decision in Simon V. Sargent saying, From the moment of injury, society picks the person up off the highway; delivers him to a municipal hospital and municipal doctors; provides him with unemployment compensation if, after recovery, he cannot replace his lost job; and, if the injury causes disability, may assume the responsibility for his and his familys continued subsistence. The annual stockholders meeeting of the M&M Irrigation Company will be held Monday, February 9, 2004 at 1 p.m. in the Moroni City Hall for the purpose of giving the 2003 financial report, discussing the pipeline project, and to elect officers for the next two yeaars, and to transact any other business that may be properly brought before the meeting. Safety experts estimate that in Utah, 174 lives could be saved each year simply by allowing law enforcement officers to stop motorists who are not wearing seat belts. Not only will this bill save lives and lessen the number of serious injuries, it will also significantly save money for Utah's businesses, governments and individuals, said Rolayne Fairclough, AAA Utah spokeswoman.
