Sanpete showcased When the Sanpete County Travel and Heritage Council set up its booth at the International Sportsmens Exposition in Salt Lake City, Doug Miller, the shows host, already knew just about everything there is to know about Sanpete County and the cities and towns along Utahs Highway 89, the Heritage Highway. Miller calls the Sanpete County area the best outdoor recreation and heritage experience the state has to offer. As far as history goes, you cant beat the Fairview Museum, my children know it intimately and it is one of the great prizes and treasures of the whole U.S. Highway 89. Of course, I cant keep my wife away from Spring City either, that is another gem. Miller adds that he is very proud that this region was maintained so well in my home state. Recognitions At an awards ceremony held in the Manti High School auditorium, two North Sanpete High School Sterling Scholar teens received top recognition. Torie Simons, daughter of Kyle and Kristine Simons, Mt. Pleasant was named Region Scholar in speech and Jenny Beardall, daughter of Lamar and Carol Beardall, Moroni, was named a Region Runner-u- p in business and marketing education. Both girls received a cash award as well as scholarship offerings to most universities in Utah. Gary Anderson, a Utah State University extension agent and former mayor of Ephraim, received an award from the Small Business Ad ministration for his efforts in starting and promoting businesses along U.S. Highway 89, the Heritage Highway in a ceremony held in Salt Lake City. Six County Economic Development District, based in Mt. Pleasant, received a 2003 Innovation Award from the National Association of Development Organizations for their Utahs Heritage Highway 89 project. Mt. Pleasant Mayor Ches-le- y Christensen was elected to serve as a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Development Organizations for the 2003-0- 4 term. It was with great honor and respect that Auto Meter Products, Ephraim, won the top Employer Award for the entire state of Utah. NSHS piano Sanpete High School received a new baby grand piano from Keith Jor- North gensen Music, Orem. James Oneil Miner gave a concert to christen the piano. Miner performed the concert at no cost to the school. The piano is a dream come true for music students who sold tickets. Jorgensen Music matched ticket sales and contributions from local businesses. New building Central Utah Telephone, celebrated 100 years of service by opening a new office building on Main Street in Fairview with a crowd of over 200 people in attendance, including Val Oveson from the state to represent former Governor Mike Leavitt. Eddie Cox, general manager of the company, noted that dreams really do come true in his short remarks. New physicians Sanpete County welcomed three new physicians this year. Dr. Michael Frischknecht is one of the new family physicians joining Sanpete Valley Hospital. He opened his family practice at the Manti Family Practice Clinic and offers full family practice services for all ages including obstetrics. He and his family live in Manti. Dr. Tristy Nunn opened her practice in the Ephraim Family Practice Clinic. She is highly trained in obstetrical procedures and family practice care, from pediatrics to geriatrics. She and her husband make their home in Ephraim. Dr. Allen Day, a family practioner from Castle Dale, is currently seeing patients at Fair-vie- w, Centerfield and Fayette elected city council members. Gunnison and Fayette both elected new mayors. Tax increase Sanpete County Commissioners have proposed an increase in property taxes. There are five areas of proposed tax increases; indigent defense fund that requires counties to put money into a savings account to pay for possible court expenses of very high profile lawsuits. Mosquito abatement; library bookmobile funding; capital improvements that would renovate and improve -- the county fairgrounds, update the jail or build a new facility and give the courthouse a major facelift. Those who have had the pleasure of working with teenagers know the dynamic complexity and heart-fe- lt generosity and contributions unique to this age group. As 2003 is coming to a close, it would be an oversight not to applaud and promote, oxy-moro- n, yet another North Sanpete High School organization called the fund-raisin- Mine closure self-estee- m to students in the school district. The goal, of which is to distribute accurate, information aimed at helping younger students and peers te learn to make choices and decisions that will help them reach their fullest potential as happy, healthy developing persons. A recent outstanding program was presented by 12 Esteem Team members, which was enthusiastically received by all seventh grade students at the middle school. Another great program was presented by three Esteem Team members, via the Kids on the Block puppetry, to all Fairview Elementary School students during December. Programs will be presented to the eighth grade students and all elementary students in the North Sanpete district during the coming months. The Esteem Team is living an important lesson about their own abilities to contribute to making a difference in the lives of others through educational messages that are clear, organized, meaningful and motivate positive response. Esteem Team 2003-0- 4 is 35 members strong! They include Brooke Anderson, Kristy Anderson, Michelle Anderson, Emilee Blackham, Sid Clawson, Lacey Collard, Tony Garlick and Brandie Graham.
