"Theyre actually tiny specks of rock that burn up and turn to ash when they slam into the Earths extreme upper atmosphere way above our heads." Observers should remember that since telescopes and binoculars restrict the users field of view they should not be used to view this or any meteor shower. Wiggins notes that his favorite winter meteor observing equipment consists of nothing more than a lawn chair and sleeping bag. While the showers peak is Saturday night and Sunday morning some Quadrantids may be seen in the couple of nights leading up to and following the peak. 2004s two other major meteor showers are the Perseids which will peak on Aug. 12, and the Geminids which will peak Dec. 14. Neither of these showers will be seriously affected by the Moon. For additional astronomical information log on to Wiggins Solar System Ambassador web site at http: planet. state.ut. us. "But wouldnt you know it," sighed Wiggins, "many of this showers meteors will probably be washed out by the glare of a nearly full Moon." The Quadrantids are not very well known to observers in the northern hemisphere because few people tend to be outside during the cold January nights when the Quadrantids are active. Meteor showers get their names from the part of the sky from which the meteors appear. For example Augusts Perseids seem to pour out of the constellation Perseus and Decembers Gemi-nid- s from Gemini. The same applies to the Quadrantids however their ancient constellation, Quadrans Muralis, the Mural or Wall, is now known as Bootes, the Herdsman. Qua-drantid- MP senior calendar 100 North.
