PLEASAN- T- Wasatch Academy Tigers baseball team began its season on a high note winning games, and without the benefit of any preliminary practice time. This years players arrived on campus just two days before the first game, unpracticed, unprepared, and unaccustomed to each others playing styles. If the recent performances of the untrained team illustrate anything about the N S Hawks seed Dixie flying 21 -- 0 season-openin- North night Friday Sanpete kept a chokehold on the Flyers all night long to earn a 21-- 0 shutout. After advancing to the 3A quarterfinals last year, Dixie was hoping for a more auspicious start this season. The Hawks also shut out the flyers 34-- 0 in 2001 as they began the first 11 win season in their history. Last year Dixie scored a defensive touchdown for its lone score in the three-yea- r series as the Hawks cruised to a 31-- 6 win, beginning their second consecutive run to the state semi-finalSenior running back Brett Madsen started where he left off last year for North Sanpete, running for 134 yards on 22 carries and a pair of touchdowns. He gave his team some ard breathing room with a reception late in the second quarter that he followed with a run to put the Hawks up by two touchdowns before halftime. Madsen put the game on ice when he scampered 50 lf yards with minutes remaining for the nights final score. The Tigers looked strong right from the beginning with Carson Smith and Andrew Smith bringing in scoring runners with hits in the first inning. Green River went down quickly initially under the strong-arpitching of Tiger Jeff Shane. Wasatch scored three runs in the fourth inning with hits from Erik Gustifson, Mac Woodruff, and Shane. Green River battled back in the fourth inning scoring two runs off of fielding errors and stolen bases, but Wasatch answered with two runs of their own in the fifth. Still tied, the Tigers came up to bat in the seventh, and after a dazzling hitting display from nearly every Tiger player, Wasatch Academy lead 14-- 6 going into the bottom of the seventh. Wasatch then brought Sean Fitsmorris to pitch the remainder of the game, holding Green River at bay and giving the Tigers their sweet victory. Wasatch again took to the road on Aug. 22 to play Valley in Richfield. The ping-pon- g style game went on into the bottom of the seventh, with Valley scoring for every Wasatch score. Tied at three in the bottom of the seventh, with the count at 2-Andrew Smith belted a deep sacrifice fly allowing Erik Gustifson to tag up and g score the run for the Tigers. The Wasatch Tigers are on their way to a great season with five fantastic wins and very little practice time.
