Show o Page Ten - The Pyramid - July 17, 2003 Moroni MORONI Steve Peterson, owner of the Moroni, was told by the city council to go back to square one in the pursuit of attempting to sell beer on Sunday. At the July 10 meeting, Peterson attempted to present a survey that had been taken at the store in which 254 people signed in favor of selling beer on Sunday. Only 25 people indicated that they did not want beer sold on Sunday. "It is not fair to my business to obey a law that no other business has to obey," Peterson told the council. "I wish there was a state law that you couldnt sell beer on Sunday. We have laws to control the behavior of the people but if you have a law that affects only one out of 10 people, they go somewhere else," said PeterValu-Mar- t, again to change an ance? Peterson also presented a letter from F. Michael Watson, secretary to the First Presidency of the LDS Church, to the council which expressed the feelings of the church on this matter. The letter said in part, "The church has taken a firm position on the moral issue of Sabbath Day observance, but the church has not chosen to comment on the personal direction of private business owners, nor has a stand been taken on what might be sold in stores that are open on Sunday. son. Most in communities Sanpete County allow businesses to sell beer on Sundays, however, Moroni does not. Councilman Milton Larson told Peterson, "We have to have a public hearing." "We already did that," Peterson replied. "The Planning and Zoning Commission already approved the sale of beer on Sunday. At the last meeting, I was told that I could do a survey and have an extension." That did not deter Larson from insisting on having Peterson pay the $65 fee to have another public hearing and again start the process of changing the present ordinance that restricts the sale of beer of Sunday. Mayor Scott Robertson suggested that Peterson and the mayor should talk to t he city attorney to see if the process would have to be restarted. David Crosland was not pleased with that comment.
