Amoir has a long history of public service going back to early years as an organizer of parades, road shows and other church functions in Axtell. Amoir was born and raised in Axtell, along with two brothers and four sisters. She left home after high school to work at the parachute plant in Manti and the in Naval Depot Supply Ogden during World War II, where she met her future husband, Verge Deuel. After the couple were married, they lived in Axtell and then moved to Gunnison. While living there, Amoir was very active in the local PTA organizations and was president of the Lady Jayc-ettes. While living in Gunnison, Amoir was the supervisor over school lunch at Gunnison Elementary. Amoir and Verge moved to Mt. Pleasant and opened Deuel Builders and Supply, a hardware and lumber business. They later added a Western Auto. The businesses w'ere successful for 36 years. For years Amoir wrote and produced many successful road shows for the Fourth LDS Ward and was very active in the Small Business Association and Chamber of Commerce, holding all key positions. The couple were members of the Lions Club, with Verge serving as the president and Amoir was a member of the Fine Arts Club. During terms as president of the Chamber of Commerce, Amoir spearheaded many projects, including upgrading Hub City Days, Mountain Days Horseshoe and the Flea Market and was always striving for the beautification of Mt. Pleasant. This led to her interest in the political arena, she ran for and was elected as the first and only woman mayor of Mt. Pleasant. Amoir served as mayor for eight years and during these years she was active in many capacities. She was a member of the Business and Governors Economic Development Board, promoting rural issues and was also a member of the Pride in Utah Committee, which promoted "Utah, A Pretty Great State." Amoir was a member of the Six County Economic Development Board, serving chairperson; a member of Small Cities, Inc., a organization promoting rural Utah; a board member of the Utah League of Cities and Towns where she aggressively promoted Utah it rural Utah. She was a member of Public Power, where she promoted rural public power; a member of UAMPS the Central Utah Developwhich ment Committee worked to save the railroad; a member of the Sanpete County Correctional Facility Committee and was actively involved in bringing natural gas into Sanpete and on to St. George. Amoir was involved with the of Highway 89, the Enterprise Zone Legislation and did research into various economic development financing packages. She was the secretary of Sanpete County Mayors and Commissioners Organization for four years; headed the new development of the Industrial Park; received the award for Mt. Pleasant City being the Most Tidy Town in 1986; and was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Utah Center for Rural Life, at the University of Southern Utah in 1996. Since retiring from business and city politics, Amoir has remained active in the senior citizens, serving on the board. This last year, she made and baked 300 pies for the Election Day sale and has taken pies, baked goods, stews, soups and rolls to functions and homes in the area.
