At a Dec. 7 meeting in Salt Lake City, the Utah Wildlife Board reversed a decision it made in November to establish a 2000 shed antler gathering season that would begin May 1 . The board voted to establish a shed antler gathering season after the Northern Regional Advisory Council asked for the season to help protect big game animals from harassment by people gathering shed antlers during the winter and early spring. Don Peay of Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife asked the board to reconsider the season because a proposal for a season to begin May 1 had not been taken to all the states five RACs for consideration. To allow people throughout Utah a chance to comment, the board reversed its decision and eliminated the May 1 start date. People may not gather shed antlers during any day of 2000. The board voted to have the idea for a shed antler gathering season taken to the public at RAC meetings next year. The RAC meetings where the issue will be discussed will be determined and announced at a later date. The gathering of antlers shed yearly by deer, elk and other big game animals has grown in popularity in Utah in recent years. Problems associated with the gathering of shed antlers includes hafassment of big game animals during months when theyre wintering and damage to big t game wintering areas. Anglers may learn about these and other new regulations by picking up a copy of the 2000 Utah Fishing Proclamation. For more information call the nearest division office, or the Salt Lake City Office at (801) for more information. The proclamation is available from fishing and hunting license agents statewide and Division of Wildlife Resources offices in Ogden, Salt Lake City, Springville, Vernal, Price and Cedar 538-470- 0, City. Anglers are reminded that rules in the 2000 Fishing Proclamation do not go into effect until Jan. 1, and to consult the 1999 Fishing Proclamation for regulation information through December. The statewide perch limit of 20 perch daily should help prevent overharvest of the popular game fish, said Tom Pettengill,-divisiosport fisheries and aquatic education coordinator. Exceptions to the statewide limit are Deer Creek and Yuba reservoirs, where anglers may keep 10 perch a day, and Fish Lake, where anglers may keep up to 50 perch daily. The winter fishing closure at high elevation Boulder Mountain lakes in southwest Utah should help prevent the overharvest of brook trout that congregate around springs in the lake in the winter, Pettengill said. High elevation lakes on the Boulder Mountains will be closed to fishing from Jan 1 to April 23. Lower elevation Boulder Mountain lakes will remain open to , fishing during that time. Anglers will find more than 50 fishing regulation changes in the 2000 proclamation. Major changes for 2000 are listed at the beginning of the proclamation. m state.ut.usdwfdwr.htm.
