Show (rxs n Page Two - The Pyramid - December 29, 1999 rn V t7 unj I 2 r On the brink Here we are on the brink. 1999 is drawing to a close. Im not quite sure what it is that we are on the brink of, but nevertheless, its the brink of something. Most people and the media are calling this the end of the century. The beginning of a However new millennium. there are those who say "Wait a minute, (or rather wait a year) the new millennium doesnt start until we begin the year 2001." Ive thought about this and Ive scratched my head. I have consulted my most trusted friends. mathematical Ive relied upon these friends for tough arithmetic over many years. These friends are my fingers and toes. (I only use toes for the most complex math problems.) By my reckoning, its all a matter of interpretation. The new year definitely commences the 2000s; but numerically speaking the year two thousand is the last year of the millennium, if that is, you start this second millennium with the year 2001. Presumably the first millennium started with the year 1 rather that zero. Ergo, die last year completing 1000 years in the first millennium was the year 1000. So I can see that the anti 1999 millennium folks have a of This, legitimate point. course, did not prevent my son from desiring and receiving the millennium edition of the board game Monopoly. I notice a new "once in a life time" cereal on the shelves at the market "Millenios." Everywhere you look its Millennium, millennium, millennium! Bowling news The words which I know are on every Sanpeters lips are; "So What?" Well, Im here to tell you that this change from 1999 to 2000 is a There are serious matter. significant problems which Im anticipating relating to the so called Y2K situation. As is common here. Ill make a short list. 1) My checkbook is not y2k compliant. The little date blank at the top says 19 . After the end of the year, I'll be facing the 2000 bug right in the "compound eye." Im going to have to physically alter my checks by scratching through the "19" so that I can write 2000. What an inconvenience! 2) As Paul Harvey has mentioned on the radio, we should check our toilet paper out. If its not Y2K compliant, it will revert to a catalog at midnight on the 31st of December. 3) The comforters people have filled with crumpled $10 and $20 dollar bills is not as warm as the down filled comforters which they have replaced. (Get that money back in the bank folks.) 4) Its a drag not being able to say catchy little rhyming phrases to each other for the new year. In the past weve been able to say "Have a great 98" or "Have a good time in 99." Somehow, "Give it a shot in double 00." doesnt quite cut it. 5) Above all, its going to be really inconvenient to me if the Second Coming of the Messiah happens this weekend. I was going to take down my Christmas lights and that event would put a real cramp in those plans. Happy Prosperous New Year Sanpete...
