Show December 22, 1999 - The Pyramid - B3 - Wrestlers take second at dual Hawk cagers drop three by Doug Johnson EPHRAIM North Sanpete Hawks boys basketball team dropped to two and seven with a 76-7- 0 home loss to Lehi, and a pair of losses to northern schools at the Snow College Invitational Tournament. On Wednesday, Lehi kept the Hawks at arms length most of the game, maintaining a four to eight point lead. Lehi had eight three point buckets in the contest, all seeming to come at times when the Hawks were threatening. North Sanpete made a run at the Pioneers in the fourth period, pulling to within two several times. But the Pioneers consistently made their free throws down the stretch and the Hawks could never pull even. North Sanpete was led by Shandon Shepherd who poured in 32 points to maintain his place atop the 3A scoring leaders. Shepherd went into tire game with an average of 23.1 points per game, just ahead of Wasatchs Steve Whitney who was scoring at a clip of 22.5 per game. and Bret Waylon Nunley Morley were also in double figuresfor North Sanpete with 14 points apiece. Shepherd also was high man in rebounds for the Hawks with eight. Nunley had six boards, with four of them coming on the offensive end. Casey Holbrook was Lehis high scorer with 23 points and Curtis Jex added 22. In the Junior Varsity game. North Sanpete missed a shot at the buzzer to tie as Lehi won 67-6- 4. North Sanpetes Landon Bailey was the game high scorer with 26 points. Jim Cheney added nine points for the Hawks. Dustin Thacker led the Pioneers with 24. North Sanpete sophomores were successful on their last second shot, and downed the Lehi sophomores, 63-6Brett Seely canned the buzzer beater to end up with 23 points in the contest. were soundly defeated in the opening round by the Ogden Tigers, 75-4- 3. The win moved Ogden's record to 7-and should help them maintain their number five , ranking in 3A. North Sanpetes high scorer was once again Shandon Shepherd as he hit for 14 points. Bret Morley chipped in eight. Ogdens G.B. Bumingham was the games high scorer with 16. The Tigers buried the Hawks with eight three-poibaskets. 2, nt 0. the Tyler Jorgensen added 12 for Hawks and Will Hyde matched Seelys 23 points to lead the Pioneers. The Hawk freshman squad hosted Payson since Lehi does not have a freshman class. Pay-so- n proved to be too much for the young Hawks as they walked away with the win, 64-3North Sanpete was its own worst enemy as the Hawk freshmen could convert only three of 17 free throw attempts. Tyson Olson led the Hawks with nine 3. points. On Friday afternoon North Sanpete traveled to Ephraim to play in the Snow College Invitational Tournament. The Hawks Saturday evening the Hawks returned to Snow College to take on the Granite Farmers. The Hawks made a respectable showing, but still ended up on the short end of a 68-5- 9 final score. With the win. Granite raised its record to 4-while the Hawks dropped to 2-- 7 on the season. Granites Andy Pace and North Sanpetes Shandon Shepherd shared game high scoring honors with 21 points each. Shepherd was aided by five treys, while Pace hit on four long range shots. Bret Morley added 13 points for the Hawks, and Rory Johnson scored eight. ' This week North Sanpete travels to Cedar City on Wednesday to take on the Canyon View Panthers. The Hawks next home game will be Wednesday, Dec. 29, when they host the undefeated Cedar City Redmen at 7 p.m. MANT- I- The North Sanpete Wrestling Team recently took second place at the Manti Tournament. The Jekyl and Hyde team played Hyde with great results. On Friday, Dec. 17, North Sanpete wrestled Gunnison and Monticello with the results placing them in a duel Tournament Saturday Dec. 18. Results of Fridays matches were North Sanpete 72, Gunnison 9; North Sanpete 52, Monticello 21; Dual tournament scores were North Sanpete 54, Union 28; North Sanpete 51, Emery 19; and in the championship North Sanpete 14, Juab 49. Teams that participated in the Manti Duals were, Juab, first second place; North Sanpete, third place; North Sevier, place; and Emery, fourth place. Other teams that didnt place were Manti, Millard junior varsi- - All-St- ar teams in the Sanpete Shoot- out, elevating their overall record to 14-1.
