Show m Page Two - The Pyramid - May 26, 1999 Sanpete There are times through the year when I am envious of the heritage of other people. On St. Patricks Day, I wish I were Irish. (Even though I do have a little Irish blood in me. Im still trying to "feel it". Its easier for me to feel the Scotch blood in me. At least thats what people around me say when its my turn to pay for During Oktoberfest, I wish were German. On Columbus Day, 1 long to be Italian. On Labor Day, it would be nice to be a teamster. (Wait, that doesnt work but you know what I mean.) My ancestry is mostly English. Thats always seemed pretty borirg to me. What day is there that I can celebrate my "Englishness?" Really, theres no Robin Hood Day or Henry the VII day. Most people in the USA dont know who Guy Fawkes was, let alone think about doing an American version of Guy Fawkes Day. English cooking doesnt really enjoy a terrific reputation either. I lived in England for several months during my college days. I enjoyed the country but steak and kidney pie, tripe, and english chips dont exactly inspire the gathering of folks for an event. Here in Sanpete, we have an ethnic connection to Scandinavia. Many of the original, settlers were from the Northern European countries of Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland. The preponderance of Christensens, Nielsens, Jensens, Olsens, Petersens, Andersens, etc. (with their various spelling variations) show the ancestral roots of Sanpete. I believe that were lucky to live in a place with Si such aiT Identifiable cultural, history which has been remembered and is celebrated. ! I This coming weekend is the high point of Sanpetes celebration of our Scandinavian heritage. Its the Scandinavian Festival in Ephraim. This is a real party. Believe me, Swedish meatballs are worth celebrating. There is a parade, food and craft booths, and live i music. There is usually danci ing, games and storytelling. i The rodeo season in Sanpete I MtEj)hraim 1 WATER RIGHT For building permit Merril Forever Young Paint, drywall, concrete, framing Residential &. They also demand the highest quality care. The challenge is to protect confidentiality while preserving the appropriate sharing of information among medical professionals. Now, Sen. Robert Bennett has written a bill that accomplishes both goals. The Medical Information Protection Act of 1999 strikes the right balance between need for stricter and protection confidentiality need for continuing quality improvement in health care. Many of these people found out where the gifts came from and appreciated what he had done for them. Dale also has done free work for those that could not afford to have it done. 'i Dale Nicholls, former Sanpete County Building Inspector, has been getting a lot of bad press lately, with untrue rumors to match. One thing Dale has is integrity. He is one of the toughest compassionate men I know and I am going to tell you about the real Dale Nicholls. Dales construction company has done business with me for more than 25 years, so I got to know him well. He never missed paying , a monthly bill to me in all the years we did business together. He always paid his bill on time and in full. Dale always bought the best products for his customers when building for them. He never sacrificed quality for price. I have never known Dale to be anything other than a very honest and truthful man. When Dale was in the construction business, every year at Christmas, he would come into my store and secretly buy gifts for poor people in the Ephraim and Manti areas. New bill provides quality (R-Uta- h) .When Dales brother was murdered in Texas a few years ago he immediately applied for a concealed weapon permit for the protection of his family. He never followed through with the application and when his wife and I asked why. You could feel the ground shake clear across four lanes of highway," remembered firefighter Dave Willson. Only mom nU before, the line - a primary feeder that had been brought down by a tree limb - was just lying across a roadside hedge. It looked like a harmless old garden hose; no wonder the man from the neighborhood thought it would be safe to move it. Happily, Captain Willson had seen him reach for the line and acted quickly to stop him. The firefighter had recently taken part in a Utah Power safety training session, where he learned to treat all downed lines as deadly. "They can snap back to life in an instant. They're not safe - period." With the passerby now out of harm's way, Capt. Willson dispatched his fire trucks to block off the highway and sidewalks until Utah Power's crew arrived on the scene. Capt. Willson is modest about taking the credit for avertirtg a tragedy. "Id rather say thanks to lessons learned from Utah Power." We say, we're a good team. It felt lilce a small earthquake. Call Lets enjoy, preserve and celebrate our "old country" roots here in Sanpete. I believe we have barely scratched the surface of the potential' for what our local heritage can be for us. I hate to use the word "exploit", but think of it with a good connotation. Our Scandinavian heritage in Sanpete is valuone of our able resources which could be developed and "exploited" to the benefit of locals and visitors alike. I was amazed to visit California last month. It was settled by Danish educators in 1911. Their chamber of commerce says that Danish visitors remark that Solvang is "more like Denmark than Denmark".
