Show r Black Hawk War certificates open to families MANTI-- - Certificates recogniz- people whose ancestors fought in the Black Hawk War may now be obtained at the Sanpete County Courthouse in Manti. The certificates are being distributed by the Sanpete County However, Heritage Council. requests for the documents have become too numerous for the council to respond to all of them in a timely fashion, says Monte Bona, a heritage council member. Jane Braithwaite and Barbara Jensen will oversee certificate distribution in Manti. For additional information, contact Jane Braithwaite at County Auditor Ilene Roth will make the certificates available at the courthouse. Certificates cost a small fee to cover printing costs. They may be filled in either by the can recipient or Braithwaite recommend a calligrapher. Certificates will continue to be available in Mt. Pleasant for people living at the north end of the county. The certificates are part of an ongoing heritage council project recognizing the historical importance of the Black Hawk War. The heritage council helped produce a documentary on the war which aired on KBYU in April. The council is also in the process of marking Black Hawk War battle sites in the county. Certificates are designed to recognize people who are descendants of Black Hawk War veterans. More than 1,000 certificates have already been distributed. At the premiere of the documentary, "Black Hawk War: Cultures in Conflict," several hundred additional people expressed interest in receiving a certificate. ing 835-584- Price 50C MT.
