Show Page Two - The Pyramid - June 3, 1998 DflMEKlTOSV Merrill Ogden Parents enjoy school festival Jazz hosts His Airness" will Tonight Sanpeters huddle around their television sets from game one of the National Basketball Association Championship series. Its the Utah Jazz hosting "his Airness" Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. Some people, including Hot Rod Hundley, call this the "World I Championship." think thats being a little pretentious. If this were the world championship, shouldnt we have seen teams from Costa Rica, Iceland and Laos some- -' where along the way? Of course, the NBA, is a North American league. If it werent for perennial cellar dwellers Vancouver and Toronto, the NBA would be exclusively American. Ironically, basketball was invented in America by a Canadian-Ameri-can. wonder if Dr. Naismith had any inkling at all of what he was starting when he nailed up those peach baskets to create a new game that would provide a vigorous and entertaining indoor sport. YMCA instructors had been expressing the need for such a thing. It all started in December 1891 in Springfield, MA. Thats where the Basketball Hall of Fame is located. Its a great place to visit if you get die chance. Some people here in Sanpete and elsewhere are critical of sports as being a waste of time. Being a TV spectator is especially picked on by nonfans. (Coincidentally, many of these non-fan- s happen to be wives.) They just cant see what is so interesting about a bunch of millionaires running back and forth playing with a ball. They believe in the haze of their I that be better spent activating the swamp cooler, cleaning the garage or wall sports time could papering the bathroom. They somehow think that the outcome of the ball game isnt going to materially affect Reader resents theft of flowers our lives. Therefore it isnt important to them. I must admit that I can understand their point of view to a certain degree. I sometimes get wound up in the emotional aspects of a game. I then have to pause and remind myself that "its only a game". Or sometimes, if Ive known someone who has travelled to Nevada. I have to remind myself, "Its only a game and its only $20.00". Theres something about the competition of a game though. The winning, the losing, the batde, the preparations and game plan, the native abilities, the practiced skills and the pure luck; its all part of the game. Im glad its the Jazz and the Bulls in the finals. It just seems right to have a rematch from last year. This could be the last year of the Bulls dynasty team. Who knows where Phil Jackson, Jordan and Pip-pe- n will be next year? We need to put the Bulls away this year, so that it cant be said that we didnt prevail over the best team basketball has seen. Im ready. I want to see M.J. have a fantastic game in a losing effort. I want to see Dennis Rodmans psychedelic hair and tattoos in a blur as he gets muscled out of position and schooled in the rebounding department. I want to ee bricks from beyond the arc. I plan on seeing Coach Jackson complaining more than Danny Ainge about the referees. So Sanpete, get your popcorn popped and get your lucky socks on for tip-otonight. If you hadnt heard. Governor Leavitt has asked all Jazz fans to wear their "lucky socks" or favorite socks during the remaining games. Evidendy Karl Malone has been wearing his same lucky socks during games for a long time now this season. Im not quite so sure Ill go along with the "Govs" instructions about not washing your socks so as not to have the "luck wash out and go down the drain." Go Jazz.... Wahnetta Simons Dear Editor: It is a sad day when you cant even put some nice silk flowers on your loved-one- s graves without someone stealing them. I went out Saturday to get my flowers from the cemetery, and they were all gone. Someone steals one or two of our baskets every year, because our graves are by the road. But this year, they took them all. This is a pretty low thing to do, and I hope their conscience (USPS Dear Editor: We were delighted with the education that Mt. Pleasant Elementary School faculty and staff provided for not only our children, but for the children of the community, during the teaching of William Shakespeare. During the semester, our children studied many aspects of that era. They learned about Shakespeare and the culture of the time through writing, dancing, reading, costuming, puppet making, memorizing and reciting poetry, singing, and last but not least by performing two excerpts of two of his most famous plays, "A Midsummer Nights Dream" and "Macbeth". Through the production of the plays, I witnessed the hard work our daughter put into memorizing her narration, by speaking in front of a mirror, or her family and friends, and the building of as she practiced speaking loudly and clearly so she would do well in front of an audience and to assure success of the play. I am sure other parents witnessed the same growth in their children. Our treated us to a magnificent reciting of a lengthy Shakespearean sonnet, at dinner. We were dumbfounded and delighted! She had been taught it so well that she was the sonnet! No notes, just pure feeling and delight in the message the sonnet offered. The second graders danced and created puppets that were costumed to duplicate the dress of the Elizabethan period. Our daughter worked so hard and had so much pride in the puppet she made, that it sits in a prominent place next to her porcelain dolls in our home. The many other songs, acts, art work and dances totaled up to an enjoyable festival. Again, our hats are off to all the instructors and administration of Mt. Pleasant Elementary School for providing this opportunity for the children of our community and for presenting pieces of what was learned for parents and family through the Shakespearean Festival format. (Next year well pray for sunshine.) j, Our special debt of gratitude to Mrs. Jane Anderson, second grade; Mrs. Laurie Gilbert, third and fourth grade, director and producer of a "Mid Summer Nights Dream", and Mrs. Charlene Palmer, fifth grade, director of MacBeth. We appreciate your helping stretch our children to reach their fullest potential! You are masters at going the extra mile, and educating our children through the seven intelligences, so that these learning experiences are personally meaningful, enjoyable, understandable and therefore retained.
