Show Page Eight - The Pyramid - April 15, 1998 Wasatch Academy inducts eight members into Natl honor society MT. PLEASAN- T- Eight students from Wasatch Academy were recently inducted the National Honor Society (NHS) during a candlelight tapping ceremony. They join 14 returning members, including four who were inducted in October 1997. The program was conducted by President Terra Larsen, Mt. Mike Pleasant; Duncan, Ephraim; Secretary Tara Johnson, Spring City; and honor society advisors Tom and Keri Rhodes. Guest speaker for the ceremony was Alan Music, Wasatch Summer School Coordinator and history teacher. The National Office of NHS has established standards that students must meet in order to qualify for membership; Wasatch Vice-preside- nt Academy has established even more strict guidelines for its members. A student must maintain a 3.2 or better cumulative GPA throughout his or her high school career. The students leadership and service to both the school community and the community at large are also considered, and the student must demonstrate exemplary character on a consistent basis. International students must be enrolled in standard college prep classes for at least one year before being considered for membership. "Besides maintaining high academic standards, honor society members are involved in a variety of school activities, from or class officers being ol to being a part of the sports, yearbook, drama, choir, perfecting, peer counseling, andor community service programs. Many are also involved in church and local community activities," said Tom and Keri Rhodes. "They are expected to continue their exemplary contributions to the school and community through out their time at Wasatch," Rhodes continued. The honor society provides a number of community services, including cleaning a section of Highway 89 north of Mt. Pleasant, working with elementary school children and visiting the elderly. Twice during the year the members hold fund raising activities and contribute all the money they raise to a variety of charitable needs. The Wasatch Academy Chapter of NHS inducted 12 charter members in May 1992. NHS, founded in 1921, ranks as one of the oldest and most prestigious national organizations for high school students. There are over 20,000 chapters throughout the United States. Local chapters are encouraged by the national organization to maintain both individual and chapter service projects. Since 1945, thousands of dollars in scholarships have been awarded to senior members by the sponsoring organization, the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
