PLEASAN- T- Lack of citizens with communication appeared to be a strong issue according to Mt. Pleasant Police Chief Kay Larsen at a Safe Neighborhood meeting held March 31. Chief Larsen said he supports Neighborhood Watch and Citizens on Patrol (COP) to help officers with extra eyes and ears to increase safety in communities. Other questions that were asked were how to contact officers, where to call, and if there is a back-u- p officer on call when a suspect must be transported to Manti which is approximately a four hour process. Some concerns were that when an officer must transport a suspect, it leaves the area will no visible officer on patrol. Chief Larsen was asked to explain the difference between calling the sheriffs department or 911. Chief Larsen explained that by calling 911 it is considered life threatening, whether its an accident or a violent situation. According to the chief, by calling the office number considerable information must be taken not because of harassing the caller, but to obtain as much information about the crime being reported for the safety of the responding police office and citizens in the vicinity. Chief Larsen suggested that when reporting a crime persons need to be as informative and descriptive as possible. Chief Larson stated that he endorsed Citizens on Patrol, which is a trained citizen patrol group equipped with cellular phones to report criminal activities and maintain a log book of dates and times and how the information was reported about suspicious situations. It was reported that support for the programs has been positive to help provide safe, clean communities to reduce fear of crime in neighborhoods.
