Show tw V Page Two - The Pyramid - November 19, 1997 Commentary Rea(Jer SayS support our officials Merrill Ogden East, the attorney general is giving you fits over campaign funding issues, Paula Jones is dragging you into court over, never mind, if you dont know. Im not going to tell you. White Water issues are still swirling with a guy in jail starting to open his mouth. With all of this and more, you just say, "The heck with everything, Im going to go play a little "pasture pool to clear my mind. I might have the cell phone on and then again, I might not." Now that I think about it, I believe I know why O.J. Simpson spends so much time on the links. Don't interpret this column to be derogatory to the sport of golfing or to golfers. Golfing, I am thinking is an acceptable alternative to alcohol abuse, domestic violence, and vehicular manslaughter. (Even though I have reason to believe that all those societal ills may well occur on golf courses.) Even though its late in the season, there is probably still time to get on the golf bandwagon this year. Though the air is nippy, swinging the clubs, and especially hitting the ball out of bounds warms the blood quickly. (Of course, St. George is just a few short hours away) So think about it. Golfing may be the cure you're looking for.. .Merrill Problem solving golf Dear Editor: I am writing to congratulate our electoral candidates, especially Mayor (Ches) Christensen for being a down to earth and a Mt. Pleasant citizen whom has spent his entire li here including being born and laised here. He is like a big brother to everyone, he always says "hello". Whether or not he said hello at the city hall on election. Im sure it had nothing to do with the results. We all know when we go to vote who is our candidate. Even if they are there, should they be home hiding in the closet? I see no reason to question the election results. The people who are responsible do a great job. Why make a mountain out of a mole hill? Sometimes the winners do the losers a favor as many of these election jobs are a headache. We are a small community with not much revenue. Everyone wants a piece of the cake. We must realize there is only so much money for the frosting. We, as citizens, must support our city government as they are "the winds beneath our wings and help to make Mt. Pleasant function as a great historical place founded and settled by our pioneer forefathers. MaybeDe Frandsen, The following was part of an Associated Press news story about the ongoing tension ami problems with Saddam Hussein and the Iraqi situation. "From the White House to the United Nations, the Clinton administration talked tough about Iraq but did not appear headed into an immediate military crisis. Clinton met with his national security advisers for 1 12 hours and then went out for an afternoon of golf." I am thinking that there is something to be learned here. I believe that successful politicians, both Democrat and Republican, have learned this principle. It is simply this: When the going gets tough; the tough go golfing. I'm certain that there is wisdom in this strategy. There is a principle at work here which Im sure Stephen Covey will make a few million bucks off of once someone sends him a copy of this column and he refines it. Before I begin to list my negative thoughts I would like you to know that I am a senior citizen. We recently received a paper asking if w-- would be willing to have an additional Si per month put on our utility bills. It seems to me like this is becoming a standard practice, one that is frequently used, often raised and never removed, such as sewer, garbage (without pickup), irrigation and fire department. We the people are loosing ground, our irrigation rights were taken away from us and replaced by paying $9.50 a month to use our water at city halls discretion, while city hall would allow water to flow wastefully down the street. " We collected kind donations to build a swimming pool for our youth and interested seniors, e where pray tell did that fly to? That money was not only collected by our town but also surrounding towns. Many senior citizens cant afford the activities so they simply stay at home, or they prefer to stay home. Their active enrollment is very limited, a small percentage of Mt. Pleasant seniors. We must all remember that the future of our seniors, of our town, of our country lies in the hands of our youth. Maybe, we should devote a few of our projects to them. I know you are going to say they have little league, at $25 a whack, or basketball at $35 a whack, or the recreation center at dollars spending on the activities, or they have their bikes, skate boards, and roller blades. True, but just let them try to use them on a surface that wont ruin them, here comes the poiice. No, I will not support $1 on TOPS Club meets here MT. To this day I have been unable to find any activities in the North Sanpete area that fit . my taste. Like many of the youth in this area, I never got into basic sports (basketball, baseball, volleyball, etc.). I was more interested in skating, biking and even an. Little has been done in the past to provide recreation for the "alternative" youth in this area, and it is about time that something happens. We too are citizens, and deserve the same privileges as anyone else. The Spring City Council has readily agreed to hold a meeting for the youth to voice their opinions and ideas. If you have any desire to make a change in our community, this is your chance. Please come prepared with ideas and opinions (adult support is welcome) on Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m., in the City Hall.
