Show Page Six - The Pyramid - July 23, 1997 Soccer camp to be Mt. Pleasant nips Moroni to claim Pony League championship held for boys, girls EPHRAI- M- An overflow crowd was treated to a classic baseball duel as Mt. Pleasant Mariners, sponsored by Aspen Leaf Realty, defeated Moroni Telecom 6 during the Ephraim Lions Club Pony League Championship game. The 13- - and boys last met in a game on June 30 which Moroni won on its home field. This was Mon is first loss of the season, and Mt. Pleasants only two defeats have come from Moroni. Mariners drew first blood in - the bottom of the first when Preston Holgreen beat out a grounder to the hole in short. The infield single scored two, as Ray Johnson sprinted from second base, never slowing down at third, to score right behind Jordan Washburn to set the tone for a hard-foughustling game by both teams. Moroni came back to tie the game in the top of the second, on a double by Landon Bailey and singles by Roberto - Frutos and Skyler Larsen. Moroni took the lead for the ' first time when Ben Kamalu ; scored after singling in the top of the fourth, but Mt. Pleasant came back to tie it in the bottom of the single by inning when a two-oGreg Poulson scored Johnson . with his second run. Moroni broke the 3 tie in the 7-- ht ut 3-- HELP when a double in gap by Kevin Santiago Vargas Pleasants defense when a perfect double play nailed Bailey at the plate to end the inning. Shane Jensen, Mt. Pleasant first baseman, after a first base force out, threw a perfect strike to Johnson who blocked the plate and tagged Bailey in a cloud of slide. dust on a head-fir- st It appeared that Moroni had busted the game wide open in the top of the sixth when Landon Bailey led off with his second double of the game. For the only time all evening, Mt. Pleasant pitcher Mori Barker seemed a little rattled as he threw wide of first on a hard come-backby Frutos, allowing Bailey to score and Frutos to go to second. Frutos scored on a single by Larsen to give Moroni the biggest lead of the game, 6-- 3. Barker, still somewhat rattled, then issued his only two walks in seven innings of work, but settled down to get Fernando Cervantes to pop to short to end the inning with the bases loaded. The bottom of the sixth proved to be decisive as Barker led off with an infield single. He scored when Johnson kept the rally alive with a clean single to right field top of the fifth the Bailey scored from first. Irons broke for second on the first pitch, the batter hit a high, twisting pop foul near the Mt. Pleasant dugout which Johnson, Mt. Pleasant catcher, caught and immediately fired to Barker covering first base to double up Irons who slid back head-firinto the base just after the throw. Keeping Moroni alive, Kamalu singled up the middle and went to second on a balk by Barker. With two outs, and Kamalu representing the tying run on second, a was set classic confrontation between the fireballing Barker on the mound and the dangerous hitter, Frutos, at the plate. Barker ran the count to one ball and two strikes, then just missed the outside comer with a fastball. Barker, obviously upset with not getting the call, was visited by his coach. On the 2-- 2 pitch, after showing the batters nothing all inning but hard fastballs Barker spun a perfect curve ball over the heart of the plate that froze Frutos for a called third strike to end the game that gave Mt. Pleasant the championship. Each team had 10 hits, with Moroni leaving six runners on base and Mt. Pleasant standing four. Barker got the complete game victory for Mt. Pleasant, and Landon Bailey went the distance in the losing effort for Moroni. Both teams will represent North Sanpete in the state Pony League Championship in Payson and Spanish Fork next week. st I? Dr. Michael Christensen said at a recent session of the Utah Farm Bureau Midyear Conference. Christensen, president of the said rural Utah Foundation, communities must adapt to new technologies and the deregulation of the agriculture industry and increased population growth if they wish to thrive and continue to farm. "Farmers have become increasingly productive, and that means fewer fanners will be needed in the future than there are needed now," said Christensen.
