Show Page Two - The Pyramid - July 9, 1997 Moroni needs to display fireworks on their own day Commentary Editors note: This letter the dates of their fireworks was received by The Pyramid for publication. Dear Moroni City Council: Merrill Ogden Sanpete Friendliness found myself making a trip to Los this past week. A Angeles friends sister had passed away and I helped him with some of the arrangements. I changed planes in Las Vegas and cut it close timewise for the flight because of a delay on the departure out of Salt Lake. It was a "ticketless" deal and I also had a misunderstanding as to the time of the connecting flight. As I walked down the jetway toward the plane, I commented to a fellow passenger, "Its good I came straight to this gate from my other flight. I thought this flight left at 9:20. It was a simple, neutral statement to make to a stranger, I thought. It didnt require a lengthy response, just an acknowledgement. The guy looked at me as if I were picking a fight. He then ignored me without a word. Giving him the benefit of the doubt, I guessed that perhaps he didnt speak English. That theory blew when he talked about his carry-o- n luggage needs to the flight attendants as we boarded. It seems that more and more people dont want to be bothered with the niceties of human interaction. Some passengers on the plane had been in Vegas for the boxing match, (head buttear bite contest) Halfway to L.A., an argument broke out among several people in the bulkhead seats which face each other a few rows away from me. The debate became loud and raucous and went from the boxing match to racial relations between blacks and whites then on to religion and God. When the flight attendant attempted to calm them down, she was yelled at and told that they had paid good money for the trip. They claimed that they could "express their opinions, however they wanted to. Other experiences during the quick trip made me wonder where courtesy and friendliness have gone in the world. I sometimes think that as a society we have become so paranoid of each other that its becoming difficult to be friendly without people questioning our motivations. I dont know if its still there or designated as such, but Utah State University used to have a sidewalk in the quad known as the "hello walk." On that sidewalk it was especially expected that "hellos" were to I Tyson-Holyfie- Sanpata's Leading Nawspapar THE PyRRIHiD (USPS 365-58- 0) Published Weekly at Pleasant Mt. Periodical aostage paid at Mt. Pleasant, POSTMASTER: UT Dear Editor: I am amazed at what the U.S. Senate did last week. Sixty mem- bers of that body voted to force elderly people who need home care to pay more for their care, all to funnel more money to hospitals. The Senates version of the Reconciliation Bill Medicare would require people who need home care to pay $5 for every visit, up to the amount of the Medicare hospital deductible. The deductible for this year is $760. Next year it will be even higher. Both Senators Robert Bennett and Orrin Hatch voted in favor of copays. Thousands of Utahs elderly receive home health services through the Medicare program. The effect of this copayment will be that those who are elderly and poor will be forced into hospitals, nursing homes or other, more cosdy institutions for proper Alcohol causes drowsiness, blurred vision, blackouts communities and state safe. Never drink and drive. Never let a friend drink and drive. Educate children early about the dangers of drinking and driving. If you see a drunk driver on the road, pull off to a safe place. Notify police with a description of the vehicle, license plate number if possible, and a direction of travel. If you see a drunk and just ignore it and hope someone else will report it, just remember one thing, your wife and family also drive these roads. If you have teenagers, they also drive these roads. So, the life you save may be someone you love. Dear Editor: A few years ago we had to really look to find an impaired driver. We thought the public was finally getting educated. We were dead wrong! Driving under the influence arrests have seen a steady increase in the last few years. Anywhere you go in the United States, at any given time, one out of 50 drivers is legally drunk. On weekend nights, one out of 10 drivers on the road is legally drunk! Thats the national average. In the state of Utah, after midnight one out of every seven drivers are under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or both. Alcohol is a powerful drug that slows reflexes, dulls concentration, and hinders coordination. Alcohol causes blurred vision, drowsiness, and blackouts at the wheel. Trooper Terry C. Smith Public Information Education Officer Crib Corner Each year in this country, more than 25,000 people are killed and 1.5 million are injured by drunk drivers. One out of every two Americans will be involved in an alcohol-relate- d car crash during their lifetime. Fifty percent of all traffic fatalities are alcohol-relateBeing able to react quickly and think clearly gives you a better chance of avoiding a crash. Alcohol impairs your judgment by and making you willing to take reckless chances. Alcohol alters your coordination, decreasing your reaction time and ability to perform multiple tasks. Alcohol also decreases your pupil reaction time, impairing your vision. It never ceases to amaze me the number of people that have the attitude that "it wont happen to me." Numerous people contributed their time and talents to make the celebration fun and enjoyable for families and friends of Mt. Pleasant. Again, to all who participated Thanks for a job well done. , d. medical care. As a result, our state taxpayers will end up paying for most of these increased costs. National data from 1996 shows Medicare hospital charges ran an average of $1,872 per day. Skilled nursing facilities received $334 per day for each Medicare patient. Medicare home care visit charges, however, were only $88 per day. So, under the Senates proposal, our states elderly will suffer and our working families will pay more in taxes. We need to remind our senators and representatives of who receives home care. The average home care patient lives on less than $10,000 a year, is at least 75 years old, and is a woman living alone. These are not wealthy people. They would likely be sent to nursing homes without their home care. Members of Congress should be told, "Dont take home care away from the poorest, oldest, and most vulnerable people in our society." Lets hope the Senate-Hous- e conference committee, who will iron out the differences in the chambers Medicare reconciliation bills after their Independence Day recess, will show a little more compassion and concern for both our elderly and our taxpayers. Pleasant, I thought you were being very rude and had cut many of us out of the chance to watch something special. But then I just thought it would be for the one year and you would go back to having them on the 3rd, which is YOUR date to have them. I just received the schedule for the 4th and you have done the same thing again! There really isnt that much going on here in the county and I cant think of one good reason why you have to have it all on one night so that a person has to choose. I feel that it is your fault, you are the ones that are "walking on Mt. Pleasants toes, so to speak." Now I feel that we need to support Mt. Pleasant, not you. I hope that next year you have the fireworks on "your" night and not on others. M. Lee first."
