The cities received their awards for consistent safety efforts and performance in providing a safe working environment with the necessary equipment for the employees. Doug Hunter, general manager of Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems (UAMPS) complemented both cities for their safety efforts. He paid tribute to them by saying, "Spring City and Mt Pleasant City's safety award is a complement to the staff, management of the power departments, mayors, city councils, power boards and all the citizens who own their own electrical system. The electrical department is the largest business in your communities and everyone has a stake in keeping it safe." Wernz began his career in 1960 with the Sanpete County Welfare Office as a case worker after graduating from Provo High School and Brigham Young University.
