Show Page Two - The Pyramid - December 25, 1996 O Searching for Christmas: we need actual meaning of Holiday Season M MENT Dear Editor: For many years now, Merrill Ogden & Calvin Hobbes Sanpete County & Bedford Falls Living m Sanpete County is like living in Bedford Falls. If Bedtord Falls doesn't ring a bell with you, here are some clues: movie, directed by Frank Capia, starring Jimmy Stewart, Donna Reed, and Lionel Barrymore (yes, Drews grandfather). If piessed to name my favonte movie, this would be the one. The year was 1946 when the movie, "It's a Wonderful Life" was released. I prefer the black and white original version You can get the Ted Turner colorized edition The movie is a standard favorite on television during the holidays Clmstmastime is the perfect time to watch this show. It depicts the importance of a life and the influence one person can have upon a town. It's a little corny, but it works. Stewart, Jimmy playing Geoige Bailey, gets a chance to see what the world would be like if he had never been born. The idea of angels is very popular right now in society. It is a novice angel who guides George through a "ghost of Christmas past, piesent and future" type scenario. The action takes place in Bedfoid Falls, a small town in New Yoik state The reason I say it's like Sanpete is that everyone knows everybody. Its small town society like we have here with people knowing most eveiy thing about everyone. There aie negatives to this type of life We have to leave the area to have any anonymity. But I believe that the positives far outweigh the negatives. Its like on the TV show "Cheers." People want to be where people know their name And on a Chnstmas Eve like today, isnt it great to be able to walk down the street and greet people by name. We are even comfortable in saying hello to people we dont know because of the spirit of friendliness which exists here. As we count our blessings at Christmas, let's remember that our woids and deeds make a diffeience in the lives of others We may not find out as graphically as Jimmy Stewarts character did m the movie. But rest assured, each of us has an effect on Sanpete County. I was surprised the other day to find out that one of my had not seen "Its a Wonderful Life." Why, I thought everyone over the age of 12 had seen this show. (Of course. Ive never seen "Gone with the Wind." I purposely avoid it to be able to say that Ive never seen it.) If you havent seen "Its a Wonderful Life," then its high time. Rent the video or check the TV listings and catch it. If its been a few years since youve seen it, now is the time to do it again. Heres my Christmas Eve advice for having an influence for good: Have a very Merry Christmas. Have fun. Remember the "Reason for the Season." Have fun. Give and get with a glad heart. Have fun. Dont drink and drive. Have fun. Remember those who might be lonely. Have fun. Make it magic for the little ones. And to all a Good Night!.... We are surrounded by abundance, yet inside we are lonely and hungry. The world is filled with every invention of convenience, beauty and genius, but many are empty, discontent, even bewildered. Spme time ago, someone came and left a small plant on our doorstep. No note, no fancy ribbon, no return address. Only a simple expression of caring. One fall evening a group of young people led by their church leaders came and raked our yard which was full of leaves. After a recent snowstorm, someone else plowed our driveway and the front of our house. No note, no phone call to say who did it. Only a simple expression of neighborliness and pure love. Those acts, to me, represent the heart and soul of Christmas and embody the true spirit of this beautiful season which promises peace to those who follow the example of Him to whom we look for hope and understanding of the true meaning of life. Likewise do our merchants put on a Holiday face... but for what purpose? To worship at the altar of mammon. While the strains of "O Holy Night," "Little Town of Bethlehem," and "Joy to the World" fill the air of stores and shopping centers, the one sound that really brings joy to a merchants heart is the hum of the cash register. I think that to bring peace, harmony and love to a society and world torn by dissention, greed and hatred takes more than singing "Jingle Bells" or "Deck the Halls" and rushing around madly buying $200 Nintendo and lead have written columns for newspapers and for four years I broadcast a daily radio program in Salt Lake City. Both activities have brought me a sense of satisfaction and reward as many readers and listeners have responded with positive comments about my observations. However, as each Christmas and New Year roll around, I find myself, once again, struggling to find some meaning in a holiday I feel is grossly abused. A quote here would be appropriate for those of you who would disagree with my point of view: "We dont see things as they are, we only see things as we are." So this is the way I see Christmas. It seems that at Christmas time, many people we regard as gifted celebrities put on these dazzling media shows, singing merry songs and telling teary stories of some "happy ending" melodrama. Yet, their personal lives are a mess as they indulge in every known and perversion vice known to man, and we, as a paying public support these "Hollow Heros as athletes, movie and television stars and yes, even piesidents. We idolize these individuals whose lives make a mockery out of the values and principles taught by Him whose birth we celebrate at Christmas. They stand in the spotlight, holding hands, even embracing each other I sponsored the whole event.
