Show Page Two - The Pyramid - October 2, 1996 - Whats l CMYAUY - & Calvin Hobbes Last week. The Daily Herald, ran a story about the visit of state legislators to Sanpete, Sevier, and Millard counties. The purpose of the excursion was to acquaint lawmakers first hand with our part of the state and the concerns which exist here. In Sanpete, the officials got to see something of the turkey (Have you ever industry. noticed a word within a word? Look at the word in"dust"ry. When the phase "turkey industry" is used; the hidden word takes on special significance.) The legislators also saw Snow College and the Central Utah Correctional Facility (read: Gunnison Prison). A town meeting was held in Sterling. The comments of Senate Majority Leader, Craig Peteras quoted in the son, paper, were fascinating to me. He said: "One of the things I was a little embarrassed to admit is 1 had not been in a majority of those communities before. " Further he said: "There is a culture in those communities that you dont see anywhere else" (I dont think he was talking about yogurt or buttermilk). Peterson went on to say that his father graduated from Snow College. The lawmaker was a member of the Senate committee which considered the restoration of the Noyes Building. Its going to have a major interior renovation. This trip to Sanpete was evidently a first for Peterson. I believe it was a good idea to get those folks off Capitol Hill and out of their districts for three days to see what life is like out in "the sticks". The report of Senator Petersons lack of experience in our neck of the woods reinforces an opinion of many Sanpeters. The opinion is that Utahs Wasatch Front residents believe that the state ends at Utah County on the South. At that point, there is a big, nebulous, uncharted area which must be traversed before reaching the oasis of condos and casinos, golf and gambling known as St. Ftn Green Elementary Sandi Olsen, daughter of Allen and Brenda Olsen, Fountain Green, celebrated her first birthday on Sept. 22, 1996. Her grandparents are Jay and Marva Olsen, Fountain Green; and Jerry and Dorothy Richins, Moroni. are Boyd Goble, Ephraim; and Lida Jensen, Sppg City. Great-grandpare- GeorgeMesquite. Word was that some Salt Lake radio stations voiced opposition to the legislators visit to our area. A waste of time and money, they said. To Petersons credit, he said, "It was money extremely well spent." (The Herald reported that they were paid their $85 daily wage for two days plus $55 a night for lodging.) Sanpete doesnt want special treatment. We certainly dont want tax dollars to be wasted. We do want the legislature to know something about us when they enact laws that affect us. We want to be recognized as being on the map. Heaven knows Sanpeters dont need a map to find their way to the shopping centers "up North". Is there a grown person in Sanpete who can honestly admit they havent been to Orem and experienced the "culture" there?... The recent Associated Press story (Tribune, Sept. 26 and 27) about Johnafirst grader, than Prevette being disciplined in his Lexington, NC grade school because he kissed his classmate on the cheek is His school called it "Unwelcome Touching" and Johnathan was denied participation in a class party as part of his "punishment". The words "sexual harassment" were also suggested in the article. Can you believe this? Contrast this story to an article written by Carl Rowan (Tribune, Sept. 15) where he reports that ld mind-bogglin- g. m Sanpete's Leading Newspaper the pyRomiD (USPS 365-58- 0) Published Weekly at Mt. Pleasant Utah, 84647 49 West Main Street Telephone: 462-213- 4 former Education Secretary Bill Bennett insisted that, "Bill Clinton is vulnerable (as a Presidential candidate) because of marital infidelity, shady business and political deals and failure to keep promises." He adds, "accusations against Clinton by Gennifer Flowers and Paula Jones (of a sexual relationship) are all legitimate campaign issues." Because of these and other Clinton character flaws, the article further reports that three friends close Clinton, long-tim- e aides in the and Department of Health and Human Services have resigned, saying they cannot trust him (Clinton) anymore. These people know him beyond his media image. Thomas Sowell writes in a Sept. 14, Tribune column that Bill Clintons character is questionable at best, and "that American values are the opposite of the values of this tawdry crowd in the White House. " A Sept. 27, PBS survey of voters in Ohio described Clinton as, "sleazy, untrustworthy and morally bankrupt. . .but who is electable because he looks and acts presidential." Now this is my point. Johnathan Prevette is quite harshly dealt with by his school authorities for kissing a female classmate on the cheek. Yet we, as a mature, supposedly morally driven electorate are currently overwhelmingly supporting a grown man with all kinds of questionable moral and ethical character flaws as our next president. And his largest block of voter support is women! Would these same school officials in Lexington, NC, hire a sixth grade teacher with Bill Clintons reputation? Snow principal or administrator? Or even as a janitor? Would any of his current women supporters want him to marry their daughter? A recent poll of voters reported that private, moral lives of elected officials need not be considered as a factor in their eligibility to serve in public office. Yet George Washington stated in his first inaugural address that the foundation of our countrys national policies should be laid in the pure principles of our leaders private moral integrity. Its been said that any business or religious organization, financial or educational institution, or nation is merely the lengthened shadow of its leader. As such, 3- Our history tells us that strong men and women have kept their country alive, sometimes their strength was fighting, sometimes it was having ideas and principles and sticking to them, having the courage to know they were right, or having the courage to admit they were wrong. Our country appeals to us because it is still young, strong and growing. It needs us. Many people say Betsy Ross made the first Stars and Stripes; some say she didnt, but we know the valuable theory is that a flag was made. So we keep the tale of the first flag a halfway legend. Our flag does not stand for one person, but for all of us. The flag is a symbol of justice for those who sought liberty under its folds and colors. Its blue stars are a symbol of light and truth and represents each of our 50 states. The white stripes are a pure color, the red strips are a brave color and all of them represent the first 13 struggling states. Observance of our American flag was made a law in April 1818. Congress established Flag Day on June 14. This date commemorates the flag resolution first inscribed at the Continental Congress, "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, with liberty and justice for all." Maybelle Frandsen - electing someone to our nations highest office like Bill Clinton says a lot about Americas collective moral attitude. This man has not only apparently seduced a number of women in his day, he also has "seduced" a once proud nation. My advice to Johnathans parents is to not get too upset over this incident and to look to the future. In 30 or 40 years, with these kinds of "womanizing" experiences and by carefully following in the footsteps of our current presidents sordid example, if he just "acts" and "looks" Presidential... who knows! We rejoice that its purpose is to make all men free. Thanks Vets! I now see from my kitchen window the American flag is back in front of the Veterans building (the old fire station). It was replaced with a new one as the old one was put to rest. Both American flags, the one in front of the Ursenbach building and the one in front of the Vets building are in front of two of Mt.
