Truitt MORONI Renewal for the franchise right of TCI Cable Company presented by Steven Proper, director of franchising for Utah and Idaho, was accepted in a Aug. 14 council meeting. Council asked to include wording to allow the right to increase the franchise amount from the current three percent upward to the maximum mandated federal government amount of 5 percent according to Proper. The last agreement was made in 1981. Proper stated residents are currently paying a $1.50 per month franchise tax. The city has no plans to change the current amount. Proper wanted the rights limit in the contract because banks look at the franchise agreements to determine money lent to the company. He said the cable business is a high-cobusiness. TCI, claims to be the largest company in the world, and borrows money to stay competitive. He said Moroni receives the same benefits as larger metropolitan areas such as San Francisco and Salt Lake City. Traffic issues Moroni resident, Paul Larson, said he was checking on a request for stop signs to be placed east of "Sams Hill." Councilman Fred-rickssaid he didnt think a four-wa- y stop sign was necessary but volunteered to see that a two-wa- y stop sign was placed. Miscellaneous Ron Pipher, councilman, has been appointed at Moronis Fourth of July representative to the county. Barbara Gordon, city recorder, said the county wants to coordinate celebrations between towns with the motive to allow people to attend different celebrations. Gordon also reported a problem of people using trees near her home for a bathroom. The trees are located by a lot used by turkey plant workers for playing ball. Rick Fredricksen, councilman reported the road by the school is waiting for cement work to be done by Dale Cox Construction and hopes the company can get to the job soon. Fredricksen was also looking for ideas to solve the high weed problems along some city streets and received suggestions of weed spraying, fixing the citys broken mower or contracting it done. Councilman Pipher reported the backstop and dugout have been completed on one of the ball fields at the new park. The next project will be installing sprinklers. Paul Larson asked if the city has a place to exhibit historical valuables. He said someone brought him a plaque for Nelson Christensen, a WWI vet. Mayor Cook responded that plans are underway to create one. Minutes for the May 22 council meeting were approved with no changes and minutes from July 10 were approved with minor changes. Applications to be taken for economic development fund SALT LAKE CIT- Y- A new economic development fund will soon begin taking applications from communities throughout Utah. The Community Economic Development Project Fund was created by the 1996 Utah Legislature (HB62) and is being administered by the Utah Department of Community and Economic Development. The funds purpose is to help improve the economic development viability of communities. The Legislature has appropriated $250,000 for the first year. Applications will be available and funding deciin sions will take place in October. .Applicants will compete for the funds based on greatest local impact, need and best use of funds.
