Show Page Two - The Pyramid - August 14, 1996 MENTARY Merrill Ogden & Calvin Hobbes Take interest in local growth According to the Sanpete Recorders Office, County there are 1,597 square miles (over a million acres) in the county. This is approximately the same land area as French Polynesia: if that means anything to you. Sanpete is bigger than the state of Rhode Island and 78 percent of the size of Delaware. Sanpete is larger than Hong Kong, or Luxembourg or Western Samoa. How Sanpetes land is governmen-tall- y managed is important to each of us. This column has occasionally kicked around the issue of Sanpete growth and land management. Like it or not, the issues are hot and cant be ignored. The timing is right and county government is to be applauded for launching into an overhaul of the county land use plan. If we dont plan now the way we collectively want it to be, well lose by default to willynillyism. The Sanpete County Planning Commission is in the midst of collecting and processing surveys which were mailed to the households of the county. This is a laudable effort of applying democratic principles to a very important issue. All of us will be affected by the . General Plan which is being formulated by our county government. Therefore, it follows, that especially on such a critical issue, all affected should have a voice. Some people I talk with would like to see the county "stay the same." I guess if we seceded from the state of Utah and these United States we could issue passports and put up a fence around the county. We could then begirt a zero growth policy and set up severe penalties for couples who exceed the offspring quota which would be mandated. These steps would go a long way in mitigating the problems associated with population growth by birth and immigration. Sanpete could then come closer to "staying the same." Some people move here with the desire that Sanpete "stay the same" not realizing that theyve made it "dif- -' ferent" by their move here. Short of such drastic measures mentioned above, the topic of land use, planning and development will not go away. Sanpete is not unique in having to face these difficult issues. Every county and municipality in the state is grappling with the competing interests and opinions on real property management. Opinions run the full spectrum from: A. "This is my ground and Ill do whatever the heck I want to with it, up to and including the cultivation of Canadian Thistle and the husbandry of 100 mink and 50 pigs on my quarter acre residential lot." TO: B. "I believe that we should all love each other and respect each other and require residents to paint all our buildings a pale pink. We wont permit wood or coal stoves; and, oh yes, no dogs or children under 12 allowed." One issue on the minds of many is the question of preservation of open area along Highway 89 in the county. Do we want our towns to eventually merge one into another ala ProvoOrem. . (GunnisonCen-terfield?- ) How are property owners rights affected when open space restrictions are enacted? Is it fair? A couple of weeks ago. I drove home from Logan and came down the old road through Willard and Perry, the "Fruit Way." It had been years since I was on that road. I was amazed at the growth of subdivisions and the "build up" there. I was also a little saddened by the change. The fruit stands are disappearing. Its different. Its not "staying the same." But life goes on. People need to build somewhere and landowners cant be faulted for selling. So, what is it going to be Sanpete? We all have opinions. The decisions made at the county level are affected by you and will have an effect on you and your children. Respond to your surveys if you havent already. I gather that surveys will be accepted probably through the 26th of this month. Attend any public input hearings that" may be scheduled. Then hang on. Its probably going to be a bumpy ride before its all said and done... We are an elderly couple concerned abqut how we were going to change the tire. As we started looking for our spare, a red car pulled up behind us. Two young men got out and immediately came over to help us. Within a short time, they had found our spare, changed the tire and helped us put everything back into the trunk. We were unable to obtain their names and Dear Editor: Recently the banking establishment started enforcing a new banking policy. This policy is that they want our fingerprint on any check that we try to cash unless we have an account with them. This may seem to many of us as just another slight inconvenience for the betterment of our society. The real truth of the matter is that this new policy is a serious violation of our civil rights. the very fingerprint required of committed thing more nature of giving a in the past has been individuals who have a felony, the only revealing and expos- - Hafffjf obk Birbkd&tf No Teeth W H air No Ears to H ear But We Love THE PyRflmiD You Anyway 365-58- 0) Published Weekly at Mt.
