Show Page Ten - The Pyramid - May 22, 1996 Flags grow from two to 200 MT. PLEASAN- T- Each Memorial Day, we see over 200 flags over the Mt. Pleasant City Cemetery to honor soldiers who gave the ultimate service to their country, their lives. In the beginning about 1986, Leslie Nelson, state commander, American Legion, approached Mt. Pleasant City to sponsor a memorial for all veterans of all wars at the Mt. Pleasant City Cemetery. The memorial was to line both streets with flags on 100 East to be flown on Veterans Day. Leslie Nelson contacted Hal Jensen, commander of American 4, arranging a Legion Post meeting with Mayor Amoir Deuel in August 1986. At that time two flags were erected, one 50-stflag for Cannon Jensen and a 48-stflag for Burdell Allred, who gave his life in World War II. Some members of the American Legion at that time were Hal Jensen, commander; James E. Johnson, adjutant general; Bert Ruesch, Eldon Hughes, Shirley Tom Dail Averett, Madsen, ThoGlen Paul Nunley, Nunley, and mpson, Earl Ursenbach, Christensen. Chesley On Nov 11, 1986, the memorial on 100 East was renamed and dedicated Memorial Avenue by Leslie Nelson in memory of all deceased Veterans. Ray Nielsen, who paid tribute to the men and women who gave their lives to nuke us free. Mayor Amoir Deuel gave tribute to both the American Legion and Veteran of Foreign Wars for the combined efforts in recognition of those who gave so unselfishly. Dorothy Jean Christensen, auxiliary president, also spoke. The surviving veterans from World War I at that time were Seymore Jensen, Vero Aiken, Henry Schofield, Lee Nunley and Earl Petersen. Music was presented by the North Sanpete High School band, color guard firing was by VFW Post 9276. Prayers were given by Mrs. Joseph Olson and Dail Averett. a.m. a.m.-i- o Cannon Jensen, Emil W. Lund, Milton K. Nelson, Joseph P. Shredeja and Cherron Seely. From then on, the momentous project grew. Pleasant Cemetery is one of the most beautiful sites in the Lf.S.A. and each year attracts more people to see the flags. Due to the diminishing members of the American Legion, their monumental task has been thken over solely by the VFW. They have worked very hard to carry on the tradition. The work behind the scene is something most people cannot imagine. ' Earl J. Ursenbach (deceased) and his wife Mary have worked very hard to see this spectacular, worthy, project come to be where it is today. In order for this project to continue, many volunteers are needed. V EMS week to honor technicians SALT LAKE CIT- Y- Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week in Utah is from May 19 through 25, according to a press release for Utah Department of Health. Those being recognized during the week are emergency physicians, nurses, medical technicians, paramedics, medical technician instructors and emergency medical dispatchers. Jan Buttery, director of the Bureau of Emergency Medical Services, stated, "Skilled and dedicated men and women give the EMS symbol its true meaning by providing lifesaving care. EMS Week is the perfect time to say thanks to the emergency medical services team.
