Socio-econom- factors ic The SAT (or any other test for that matter) cannot possibly provide a complete measure of academic performance or overall quality in Utahs public schools. The test measures only a limited range of classroom skills taught. One of the major concerns expressed by educators about a statewide testing program was that comparisons between schools with differing indicators such as income, migration (population stability), characteristics, family type, racial composition and language, among others. Looking at test scores and concluding that some schools are batter than others is too simplistic, says the Utah Foundation report. socio-econom- ic In an attempt to deal with this, the State Office of Education created the expected test range! for each school based on the percentage of students in each school obtaining free lunch or qualifying for Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC). These data do not address directly the full range of sociobetween economic differences student populations. However, they are the most readily available indicators of such differences. Despite these caveats, the statewide testing program is a useful barometer for educators, parents and legislators in evaluating out public schools. The test results are more meaningful if there is an appreciation of the limitations and of the factors which contribute to high or low test scores. deUne to expreu our, iincere appreciation foa the manyexpneiiioniokindnelL and love do tenderly extended throughout om ntontd life, and during her, ilinedi and padUny I dpecial thanhd to the.
