More people have died from crashes caused by drunk drivers than those who have lost their lives in all of the world wars, Korean and Vietnam wars. These are just a few of the sobering statistics that were talked about. Graham stated "How many more people have to die?" She also wondered, "When is enough, enough?" Every year we approach the state legislature to help us solve this problem and nothing happens. She is exhausted and tired of our state legislators hiding from the problem, so she personally will be introducing legislation this year that will make a third DUI offense a felony, with mandatory jail time. This bill will make it easier to get DUI convictions. No longer can the drunk driver hide behind loop holes in the law; laws that a diesel truck could be driven through. If you have ever wondered how our local school is doing after watching the news relate stories about violence, mayhem, and activities that dont seem to fit into the normal school curriculum, perhaps this will give you some insight. Locally, our school does a pretty good job. The students, for the most part, come every day, sit through their classes, listen to the instruction, and do the required classwork. The teachers are in their classrooms. They answer questions. They do whatever they can to facilitate the success of each and every student. The administration handles the matters that arise quickly and efficiently, and school doesnt seem to miss a beat. On the surface, that sounds like a pretty dull scenario. But would you have it any other way? No doubt it would add excitement if the TV crew showed up to film due to the arrest of dozens of students peddling drugs. And it would certainly give a more urban look if our students arrived on the campus wearing bandannas dark glasses, and flicking Marlboro or Camel ashes from their vehicles, in full view of students and anyone else who may come along. But they dont. And perhaps there is more than meets the eye when those types of problems are not visible. If the reader thinks that they dont exist in this geographic area due to some outside force of good, that would be incorrect. - w- - E RCA RA N DaWEIHWOlI of zero deaths and injuries due to' .a lack of drunk driving. It may be well to start with the basic values that permeate ; the society that exists locally. Do the people display those civil qualities that contribute to group harmony, or is it a situation where survival has become the paramount focus of peoples thought process, such as in inner city neighborhoods where the boys in the hood : call the shots? And what about all those drugs? I would suggest the key would be found in the attitudes and actions displayed by those who work in our schools and with our students. It is adherence and vigilance. It is the combined effort of all to make sure that small problems do not become large. It is fairness. No student will receive any less or more, due to some perceived social strata' It is an attitude that fosters friendliness, respect for the rights and property of others, and the opportunity to do as well and go as far as the student is endowed to do with the talents they possess. How long this can be maintained is the real question. It isnt achieved easily. To let it go would probably mean never seeing things as good as they are ever again. How good is our school? Pretty good. But if you want sure satisfaction, visit some other schools and then come in and see for yourself. For most, that would be quite sufficient. Floyd Lawson seasons greetings.
