Waterfowl, elk and deer are on the minds of licensed hunters now. Go into any cafe, government office or church foyer and the conversation will turn to "the hunts. Any adult Sanpete male worth his testosterone has a hunting story to contribute to the conversation. Many Sanpete women can tell hunting whoppers too. My dad did some hunting in his day. But by the time I turned 16, he was 60. By then he was not thrilled with the prospects of sleeping out in October nights and jockeying for position at daybreak with zillions of deer hunters with California license plates. Years later. Dad caved in to the begging of my younger brother who wanted to go hunting deer. He wasnt old enough to carry a gun. Dad took Kenyon to the store and asked to buy one 6 shell. The clerk knew Dads brand of humor and for Kenyons sake a production was made out of the fact that Dad would have to buy a whole box of bullets. on the By midmorning opening day of the hunt, Dad and Kenyon were down from the mountain with a buck. Only one shot was fired and Kenyon couldnt believe the hunt was finished. My deer hunting was mainly done with friends. It was fun when it wasnt too cold or. too scary ' what with bullets whizzing up and down the ravines. Pheasant hunting was fun too, but now it seems the old traditional hunting grounds of my day have all but disappeared. I suspended the hunting of mammals quite a few years ago. Come to think of it. Ive suspended the hunting of birds for many years as well. (This in spite of the fact that I won a shotgun on a Ducks Unlimited banquet raffle.) I still do a lot of hunting I hunt for many though. things. I hunt for my keys. Theyre usually right where I 30-0- Saitpafe's Lauding Newspaper THE PyRfllDID (USPS365-5S0- ) Published Weekly at Mt. Fear not, the answer is so simple and logical that it surprises me that no one has thought of it before. Lets introduce cod liver oil into our water system. Just think, no more irregularities, no more sex crimes, no more neurotic illnesses, no more cavities. What more can one ask for? Red collar with a polka dot bow. That sign was hanging up at the Manti Market the other day. It was to signal me, again, the quality of life that is alive and well in Sanpete. I love to bring these stories to light because we lose touch with the truly important elements of our lives that mean QUALITY OF LIFE. These, qualities are otherwise, obfuscated by the everyday mechanics of our lives The story, though not amazing, is this: A small, very old dog that, to me, has "stayed too long at the party" was inadvertently, released from its yard. It wandered far and was lost quickly. Missed almost a quickly. A search ensued to no avail. Much sadness for 'a lovely, lovely, teenage young woman. However, as you have already rushed ahead and concluded, a thoughtful, lov- ing, caring person saw the old dog and rescued it. She made the aforementioned signs. Went out to post them in con- spicuous places and went home to care for her charge until the owner discovered the signs and called to complete the rescue. My hat is off to this wonderful lady!!! Many thanks to the you for your concern-fo- r to hold dear principles you yourself that motivated you to care. If any of you reading this column today were to consider the qualities involved in this simple yet so worthwhile act of kindness-- I 9 Craig Conover Penny Hamilton left them. I hunt for my wallet. Its usually in the pocket of the pants I last wore. I hunt for a 'particular pair of socks. Theyre usually on my sons feet. At work I am constantly hunting for the case file I desperately need at the moment. Funny about that, its always in the last place I look. I spend an inordinate amount of time in my life hunting. I believe wild game hunting is great and has many positive aspects. Its a great Sanpete tradition which I sense is becoming more difficult to maintain for a variety of reasons. I do wish you real hunters good luck and safety. Ill think of you deer hunters Saturday morning. Youll be sitting on that cold rock overlooking the draw waiting for the sun to come up. Ill be in the sunny south rolling over in bed wondering whether to hunt up breakfast buffet before or after a swim. Save a rock for me next year.
